Keeping up appearances.

In rewatching keeping up appearances and even though it's old I still find it hilarious. I used to watch it as a child.

I used to find Hyacinth really annoying as she's obviously written that way. However on a second watch I actually feel sorry for her.

She's obviously annoying when she tries to be posh but I find everyone's hatred of her a bit OTT. Like Emmett hiding from her, the Vicar and his wife avoiding her phone calls. All the neighbours badmouthing her dinner parties and avoiding her house.

She's obviously got a good heart but just tries too hard, I think she's married Richard and is trying hard to fit in with what social class she thinks he is.

Or maybe I'm overthinking a very old tv show after a glass of wine Grin

Any thoughts on Hyacinth? Love her, hate her? And would you avoid her on the street?

I wish she were my gran. She's a right hoot.

I love her. Although imagine Hyacinth as a MIL. The posts that you'd make on AIBU

Funnily enough both of my grans loved watching it. I think they saw a Bit of themselves in her.

I always felt a little sorry for hyacinth too. She tried so hard but no one really liked her did they. I loved her sister, Daisy and Hyacinth's long suffering husband.

I love Onslow too.

Yeah although she was overbearing I think she meant well deep down.

I loved this programme! Still do!
But no don't overthink it!

WitchyMcWitchface · 20/11/2018 07:11

She appeared to be oblivious of other people's opinions of her. So I think the writers got away with it. Great writing and great casting.

Genius writing, genius acting. Love it. Most comedy doesn't age very well but this has.

Loved it
Still find it very funny

I found a lot of the sitcoms from that era made me feel sorry for the main character. It was a lot of laughing at someone rather than laughing at the situation.
For that reason I didn't find them very funny, but I know I'm in a minority for that.

DeadZed · 27/11/2018 09:26

Yes, Witchend, I think you are correct. But this kind of feeling sorry for them keeps you hooked. Programs like "Only Fools", "One Foot in the Grave" etc, all have that kind of massive character flaw which finds me rooting for them however ghastly they are to those around them.
