Dr Who - Historical accuracy

So this weeks epidide of Dr Who opened with a Pakistani lady talking about the first woman to work in a textile mill is South Yorkshire after the Partition of India.

The Partition happened in 1947. South Yorkshire wasn’t formed as a separate county until 1974. I’m surprised the bbc didn’t pick this up.

Also, the textile mills were pretty much all in gears now known as West Yorkshire. The area now know as South Yorkshire was much more about steel and coal, and tractors in Doncaster.

Was the old lady she was sat with at the end the lady who's wedding she went to?! I thought it was, but then if she was old enough to get married in 1947 then she would be 98+ years old now Confused

Yes, the same woman greyspottedgoose, that was the point. I think your maths is off though - she looked about 17 at the wedding, making her 88 now.

Oh, I'd assumed she was about the same age as yas who is somewhere around 28-30 I'm sure? Makes more sense that she was younger

The Partition happened in 1947. South Yorkshire wasn’t formed as a separate county until 1974.

She said she was the first Moslem woman to work in a textile mill in South Yorkshire. She did not give any indication that it happened just after the partition. And she isn't necessarily right - this is just what she believes, just as she believes that she was the first woman married in Pakistan.

Also, the textile mills were pretty much all in gears now known as West Yorkshire

But there were some textile mills in South Yorkshire so it isn't impossible. Indeed, the fact that there weren't many mills in South Yorkshire makes it more likely that someone starting working in one in the mid 1970s could be the first Moslem woman.

Given the lamentable scripts and storylines, minor possible inaccuracies are the least of the BBC's worries.
