anyone else watch it?

it was sad, frustrating to sit and feel powerless to help.

Really uncomfortable viewing, I agree.

I especially hated the men laughing over the horrific treatment of these women, as if it was inevitable.

nameforthethread · 04/11/2018 23:29

I know the off hand way they are dealt with is breath taking, especially the phone call at the end when the senator was asking if they spoke about Mary's case.

I didn't realise you had started a thread in FWR as well, I admit I thought of starting a thread both there and here.

The conversation about different nationalities and their 'levels' was also particularly awful.

Rachelover40 · 04/11/2018 23:37

I haven't seen it but will watch the programme.
There is quite a bit of slavery in this country too, horrible business.

nameforthethread · 04/11/2018 23:37

yeah sorry wasn't sure were was best so went for both....

the senator at the end must have felt so demoralised and angry. No one cares apart from the women and families it effects.

I posted this on the other thread:

Truly shocking. That Lebanes arsehole laughing about the maids that comit suicide by jumping off buildings. Evil, evil man. This is his twitter if anyone wants to tell him how hideous he is and how much women despise him @maherdoumit

Is there anything we can do to help Emma?

nameforthethread · 04/11/2018 23:41

I would like to help too.

The Sun ran an article on this.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/7643103/modern-slavery-middle-east/

This is a quote from it.

Although Senator Mbura has started a grassroots campaign to help the victims of modern slavery in the Middle East, without help from her fellow politicians she is limited in what she can do

Maybe we could look at the grassroots campaign?

sarahr66 · 05/11/2018 00:03

how about a crowdfunder or similiar to raise funds for the grassroots project? maybe the programme makers can provide the details of this and where the money raised could go?

A week ago, one girl from Uganda was killed by her employer because her husband was interested in her.
We have heard stories, too horrific to mention here. What you saw tonight, is actually nothing compared to the stories we hear everyday.
Oman is the worst country.
I have a clip, which is too graphic to show here where an Arab man chopped off a maid's head because the baby she was looking after fell and died! It's awful awful awful.

MissQuad · 05/11/2018 01:34

Warning: Distressing

calpop · 05/11/2018 01:47

Is there anything we can do?

I thought I was beyond shocking but wathcing that program tonight, which I appreciate is only the tip of the iceberg, was a wake up call.

MissQuad · 05/11/2018 09:35

calpop Oh yes, there is plenty we can do.

Incidentally early last year, I wrote about this issue on Mnet, pleading for help for these women and was literally 'shut down' by posters Sad, which was quite upsetting.

calpop · 05/11/2018 13:23

I find that hard to believe, buy maybe you posted in the wrong place. I think they'll be enormous support over in the Feminism section - see this thread, maybe we should merge them and use that one instead?
