I haven't watched last week's episode - how bad is it? The old spiders used to scare me half to death (even re-runs)

So what is this time around like?

It's awful. I'm really sorry to say that. Great episode - but the spiders are terrifying...and I don't really mind them that much.

HLBug · 03/11/2018 20:21

The special effects team etc have done an awesome job...but yeah, terrifying!

Calzone · 03/11/2018 20:21

It’s quite scary but ok

My ds managed to watch and he’s terrified of them

KatyMac · 03/11/2018 20:25

Ok

I'll stick by my decision to not even try!

I am a wuss!

I actually had to cover my ears as well as my eyes while my family were watching it.

KatyMac · 03/11/2018 20:46

First ever episode I haven't watched (that are available and haven't been lost by the beeb)

The other ones that terrify me are the green death (large maggots?) And the angels (they terrify me silly!)

I have made the decision not to watch that episode. It will be the first one I have missed in a long time.

fruitpastille · 03/11/2018 21:32

DS had sleepless nights and he's not too bad with spiders generally!

EmbraRocks · 03/11/2018 21:43

I hyperventilated behind a cushion- reminds me of Dr who of my childhood!!

missyB1 · 03/11/2018 21:45

Yeah it was horrible.

Lacypants · 03/11/2018 21:47

Super pleased I didn't watch it with the kids, they are terrified of spiders

RebelWitchFace · 03/11/2018 22:03

Not a big fan of spiders(not a phobia though) and while they were scary they were also "unreal" due to their size. If they would've kept them small but in huge numbers and aggressive it would've been terrifying. At that size they seemed almost comical(scary).

KatyMac · 03/11/2018 22:11

How big were they? As big as the old ones?

EnidButton · 04/11/2018 00:10

I thought I wasn't going to be able to watch it and actually stopped about 10 minutes (maybe 15) into it. But curiosity got the better of me and I went back in.

I'd say the worst bit it around the 10-15 min part. Minor Spoiler

When they go into the neighbour's flat and into her bedroom. There's one in there which follows them for a couple of minutes which I did find too much. It's small dog sized which was small enough to still look real. You could squint and fast forward through that bit.

After that they are so big that it's obvious cgi and not that bad. There's a scene near the end with lots of them. When the music is playing. You could zip that and not miss anything.

Honestly it wasn't that bad after that first one.

EnidButton · 04/11/2018 00:11

Small dog sized and then ridiculously huge car/van sized with some smaller rat/cat sized ones.

The dog one was the hardest for me.

EnidButton · 04/11/2018 00:13

I suppose it depends how bad your phobia is?

SD1978 · 04/11/2018 01:50

Does anyone feel the latest series is trying to be and succeeding to be the scariest? If that makes sense? All the people dying in the first episode, it seems to be 'realer' than previous series?

KatyMac · 04/11/2018 07:34

My phobia is pretty bad - possibly connect to an allergic reaction to spider bites!

OP posts:
EnidButton · 04/11/2018 13:19

Not sure then. If you can zip past that flat/parcel collecting bit you might be ok with some one eye open squinting. Or just watch the first 10 minutes and the last 5 so you see the interactions with the companions and the doctor. You won't miss anything important.

PenguinSaidEverything · 04/11/2018 13:20

I was fine because they’re really big and don’t look like real ones. The movement is fairly realistic so there were a few moments where I looked away but I was generally okay and I’m extremely phobic. I would compare it to the big spiders in Harry Potter.
