Is it just me or has Australian tv got quite good?

I really enjoyed the first series of Wanted, and have just finished watching The Letdown (with the fantastic Celeste Barber, although she wasn’t even the lead role)

Last week started watching No Activity, and this evening came across Mystery Road. This last is fascinating as it really showed what it is like in the outback/bush.

What I’ve enjoyed is the the laidback laconic approach to life that (many) Australians seem to have, and also the different view on casting which is so different from American tv... especially the focus on female leads who are not young, blonde and beautiful.

No spoilers for Mystery Road please! I’m just enjoying watching something a bit different - what does everyone else think?

Wanted and The Code(1st series) were really good.

goforkyourself · 29/09/2018 23:26

Have you seen Mr Inbetween?

FaithInfinity · 29/09/2018 23:28

Please like me on Prime is beautifully written. Comedy/drama. Daft in places, heartbreaking in others.

buckeejit · 29/09/2018 23:29

Loved please like me, will have to look up the others.

goforkyourself · 29/09/2018 23:33

Mystery Road is brilliant! Watch it until the end...

RedDwarves · 29/09/2018 23:35

I'm Australian. I think our TV is generally rubbish. Kath and Kim is peak TV, Offspring was very good, Rake is decent, Puberty Blues was very good, the first season or two of Underbelly was good, as was Bikie Wars... and that's about it.

Mrskeats · 29/09/2018 23:36

I adore Kath and Kim
Taking notes about other good tv

SophieGiroux · 30/09/2018 00:03

Wentworth is brilliant, much better than the overrated Orange is the New Black

itstheyearzero · 30/09/2018 10:27

Agree! Please Like Me and Offspring are both superb

Yoksha · 30/09/2018 10:59

Another yay for Mystery Road. Posted on a mixed thread about how good it is. Didn't want to start another thread, because we are awash with them ATM.

I love the scenery. Its in stark contrast to the brilliant grey/wet/cold/ Scandi scenery. Also enjoying the underlying tensions with the indigenous population. Not enjoying in a good way. More that it's being highlighted. It's got the lot. Rape, drugs, racial undertones and conspiracy. Surprisingly good drama.

What’s that one about the woman who was adopted and she finds her birth family and they are bikers? And they live in a massive house.

We’ve just watched ‘sisters’ on Netflix.

spacefighter · 30/09/2018 18:33

Harrow is fantastic and Safe Harbour.

spacefighter · 30/09/2018 18:35

Oh and Glitch.

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/09/2018 18:42

Two I've enjoyed recently are Secret City (almost an Aussie House of Cards, on Netflix) and The Beautiful Lie (a modern day version of Anna Karenina). The Letdown was hilarious!

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/09/2018 18:43

@SavoyCabbage that was Upper Middle Bogan!

SavoyCabbage · 30/09/2018 19:19

Yes! That’s it Queen.

kateandme · 01/10/2018 00:13

I find that on nz stuff too.800 words.
even the oz soaps home and away and neighbours.
and shortland street.
can I watch all the above shows if I don't have Netflix :(

PickAChew · 01/10/2018 00:16

We got the Nowhere Boys on CBBC and that was so bad it was good. Atmospheric and suspenseful but a little low budget!

iwantavuvezela · 01/10/2018 00:19

Have you watched Offspring on Netflix - so so good.

Also Rake, (Netflix) enjoyed that as well. Are the ones you mentioned on Netflix?

RedDwarves · 01/10/2018 00:20

Oh Upper Middle Bogan is fantastic, and very accurate to the stereotypes (Australian here).

I know this an old thread but I was going to post asking a similar and found this. Anyone found anything in the last year to add to the list?
