Do you mean did this particular story happen or did the Rwanda genocide happen?

Haven't been watching the series (but may look at it) the Rwanda genocide absolutely occurred in the early 1990s and it is estimated that between 500,000 and 1,000,000 were murdered and over 2,000,000 fled the country as refugees

It's a fictional drama based on the backdrop of the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

Take a look at the film Hotel Rwanda, it's a good starting point.
I was at sixth form during the genocide and we had Trevor McDonald come in to talk about it. I've since taught it as part of Citizenship enrichment in secondary school, but this was ten years ago. I'm disappointed but not surprised that it isn't still addressed in schools, in fact Michaela Coel brings this up here: www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2018/sep/16/star-black-earth-rising-education-1994-wanda-genocide She recommends these books: Tim Butcher’s Blood River and Stephen Kinzer’s A Thousand Hills, but a short history can be found here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-13431486
