Ok, ok, I realise that I'm a bit behind the times to have only just discovered Breaking Bad Blush In my defense we've only recently started using Netflix....

Managed the 1st 3 series in about 10 days, loved it, I am now on Series 4 Episode 11, and I'm really starting to dislike Walt, he seems to be nothing but a massive PITA!!

Did anyone else feel like this?

Love Jessie!!!

You’re supposed to dislike Walt, he’s a very dislikeable person! I’ve watched the lot multiple times and he’s a nasty piece of work from the outset.

Malibucyprus · 18/09/2018 14:10

I didn't mind him to start with, just thought he was a bit of a drip!

Strangely, I actually really like Gus.....

BB is the best series I ever watched.
I watched it twice!

TheVanguardSix · 18/09/2018 14:20

I think the writers are geniuses. You're meant to grow to loathe Walter... and then totally root for him again when you fear his back's against the wall. I couldn't stand Hank. In the later part of the series, I felt total sympathy for him which conflicted with my renewed sympathy for Walter. The characters change and how you feel about them will also change, then bounce back to what they were, then change again. What a fabulous series. Enjoy!
And when you're all finished with Breaking Bad, move onto Better Call Saul. It's different, but brilliant... in some ways more so than Breaking Bad, which is tough to admit because I loved Breaking Bad. But definitely give Better Call Saul a chance. But wait a few weeks. Wait until you've recovered from your "I've Finished Breaking Bad" depression. Grin It's a thing. Seriously.
Gus Fring is one of my very weird crushes. I have never admitted this until now. Hmm

Malibucyprus · 18/09/2018 14:39

It's strange, one minute I think Walter is a drip, then a normal, misunderstood bloke, then an arsehole, you're right, it really is genius how the writers can manipulate your feelings towards the characters!

I liked Hank to start with, not so keen on him at the moment - post accident.....

I'll definitely try Better Call Saul, I really like Saul & Mike too!!

I can believe the depression thing, I'm not looking forward to the end Sad

(Don't worry your Gus crush secret is safe with me) Grin

If you like complex, well-written antihero type things, definitely get hold of The Shield when you’re mourning finishing BB. In my opinion it’s the only TV series that’s better than BB. That show nearly destroyed several times.

LittleLebowski · 18/09/2018 22:13

Oh my god yes, The Shield! One of the forerunners of the amazing quality TV series from HBO. The descent of Vic Mackey as he slides from a grey area to the dark side and his relationship with Shane - there were some jaw-dropping moments. Not sure where you could watch it and how it's aged, but given the continuing issues of police corruption and brutality in the US, it must hold true today.

For BB, I totally get the Gus crush - he's such a gentleman! I'm really enjoying Better Call Saul as it fills in many of the blanks of how he built the crime empire before Walter. I didn't get annoyed with Walt as much as I did with Skyler? I always felt his motivation was the benefit of the family and she was just always unhappy and moaning. I know Walt is caught up in his need to prove his brilliance, but he still seemed essentially a good person to me who does struggle with, ok some, of his more shocking actions! Maybe I have low standards, or just can't get Malcolm in the Middle out of my brain. Some bits of BB are so hideous to watch, but at the same time very funny, right from the bathtub crashing through the ceiling in episode 2, I think, and Walt in his y-fronts in the desert. Such genius writing!

Malibucyprus · 19/09/2018 10:40

Ok, definitely gonna give The Shied a watch, after Better Call Saul.

I don't like Skyler either, haven't took to her at all, the fact that she was so quick to end things with Walt and jump into bed with Ted was shocking. Considering everything she and Walter were going through, cancer, new baby etc....I find her very hard faced. Not keen on Marie either.

The Shield appears on Netflix every so often. It’s a shame it’s not more easily accessible but definitely worth buying the DVDs or getting it through Amazon Prime if you have it.

Visually it looks a little aged in places but you get used to it very quickly and my god the writing is phenomenal. I envy people who get to watch it for the first time.

TammySwansonTwo · 19/09/2018 14:52

Rewatching BB at the moment while waiting for the rest of BCS to air and to remind myself of all the things it’s referencing.

This time I’ve detested Walt from very early on - the way he treats Jesse is disgraceful, even in the early days. I have much less of a problem with Skylar this time. Sure, she’s a lot more passive aggressive than I would be, but I understand her much more than I did first time round (maybe because I’ve been pregnant / had kids now).

ArtemisWeatherwax · 19/09/2018 16:17

there comes a point though when you are really routing for Hank and even Marie, and then Skyler - it's very very good at making you want these horrible people to succeed.

Malibucyprus · 19/09/2018 17:06

Was anyone else disappointed with the way Gus died?

I feel weird because, I didn’t want him to die at all, I know he’s a drug dealing scumbag blah blah blah but I like him!! Blush

I get why they killed him off, I just don’t think it was the right way to do it?!

TammySwansonTwo · 19/09/2018 17:32

It was definitely the right way to do it - the right person took him out, even though I despise that guy. Very satisfying writing IMO.

Ceebeegee · 23/09/2018 20:17

I never understood the amount of dislike at Skyler , what is it that makes her annoying ?

Malibucyprus · 27/09/2018 11:02

Well, finally Skyler is growing on me!!

I am up to episode 11 (S5), and my opinion of her is changing.
