interesting programme.
I like that it's not black and white.

I had to stop drinking for health reasons a few years ago, but was not drinking much before that.
I am fed up with people trying to make me have 'just the one'

This was very interesting. I did not realise younger people are not drinking as much as the 50 + age group. I felt sorry for Adrian Chiles, such an air of sadness about him. He seemed lonely and ill at ease with himself.

crappyday2018 · 27/08/2018 22:37

I was shocked at how much he was drinking yet wasn't classed as alcoholic. What makes someone else alcoholic, but not him? I suppose with him it was a social thing, he wasn't sat drinking alone at home all the time, or hiding it.

Itsear · 27/08/2018 22:40

Interesting, I had wrongly assumed that AC had talked up his drinking to get publicity for the show but he definitely has a problem and obviously has too much money and time on his hands and his drinking has got out of control.

greeneggblueegg · 28/08/2018 09:48

Watching it now and really shocked by Frank Skinner's advice to AC
I.e if you're not seeing spiders on your ceiling you're not an alcoholic and so crack on (despite drinking 50/60 units per week ShockConfused)

IME if you always have the thought
of the next drink in back of your mind, can't imagine life not drinking, need it to relax, de-stress, socialise etc (no matter how little that may be), you have an alcohol addiction

redsummershoes · 28/08/2018 09:57

I was also shocked at adrian's parents.
very sad imo

Yes both his parents held pretty dysfunctional views

Gromance02 · 28/08/2018 10:27

I think it was a great insight into alcoholism and highlighting that you don't have to be homeless, shaking and having vodka for breakfast to make you an alcoholic.

Itsear · 28/08/2018 18:24

His parents both seemed really unhappy as did he, it was a bit odd really. I wondered about the bedroom with two single beds side by side, not really relevant to alcohol but it is always good to have a nose around celebs houses. Also not sure why we needed Frank Skinners advice when qualified doctors had already stated that AC had a problem and his liver was damaged? I hope Adrian gets the help he needs and realised that you don’t need to be hallucinating and pissing yourself to have a problem.

ImperfectTents · 28/08/2018 20:39

Frank skinner appeared quite stupid. A drinker only needs to hear one voice of encouragement to keep going. It was obvious that Adrian Chiles is an alcoholic and his life would be massively improved if he stopped drinking.

NoelHeadbands · 28/08/2018 20:45

I thought Frank Skinner came across as a proper muppet, as desperate to still be seen as ‘one of the lads’ as much as he was when he used to sit pretending to drink bottled lager in Fantasy Football. And he kept meandering from any kind of point, if he ever had one to start with Hmm

greeneggblueegg · 28/08/2018 21:00

It was almost as if FS was deliberately trying to fuck with AC's mind

enbh · 28/08/2018 21:07

Such a weird documentary...he clearly needed to stop drinking as he was absolutely alcohol dependent but in the end he didn't! DH said have we really just sat and watched a whole show about Adrian Chiles not stopping drinking? He's so clearly troubled and needed his friends to tell him it's ok not to drink, not to encourage it!

EdWinchester · 28/08/2018 22:36

The twin beds were in his parents' house.

Staggered at how much he drinks.

HopeClearwater · 29/08/2018 22:30

I’d love to know why Jane Garvey and he split up. I know he’s says it was nothing to do with his drinking but I find that hard to believe. Someone drinking that much is rubbish company if you’re not doing it with them.

Mrsmadevans · 29/08/2018 22:43

AC there is something very sad about him , I really enjoyed the programme thought it was very interesting . His parents were a little odd, his mum didn't believe in depression and the father wanted to drink again. As for FS never liked the horrible little weasel.
