I love This is Us and things like that. All that angst and drama.
Anything similar on Netflix that I might like?

Succession is very good. I watched it on Now TV, it's some Sky channel. Brian Cox plays the head of a global media company with his children jockeying for position and trying to push him out. It has shades of Bonfire of the Vanities about it, ridiculous wealth, appalling people. Get Shorty is quite enjoyable too. A fixer for a criminal goes to Hollywood. Quite a lot of casual, shocking violence though.

MongerTruffle · 29/08/2018 13:10

House of Cards and Orange is the New Black are very good.

LittleLebowski · 29/08/2018 15:51

Yes, I've enjoyed Succession too. Found it hard to get in to as everyone is a total arsehole so there are no goodies! People are saying it's like the Trump family, but I believe it was based on the Murdochs and Brian Cox's character does indeed head a media empire. I thought This Is Us was more touchy-feely, emotional drama that cut-throat, stab your family in the back stuff? Otherwise Transparent is more family relationships based, with a good deal of humour and drama.

Olivesandwine · 29/08/2018 21:51

Is transparent on Netflix? I like the sound of that.
I do like a bit of emotional drama. Not so much the backstabbing and stuff. I heard parenthood was good but don't know where its on.

Do you have Amazon Prime? If so, all 5 seasons of Brothers and Sisters is on there. It's a great US family drama.

LittleLebowski · 30/08/2018 07:37

Ah, yes I'm getting confused as This is Us is on Amazon Prime, Netflix and All4 apparently! Transparent is Amazon Prime.
Parenthood (the series) is Hulu, and not free on Amazon Prime. I'd forgotten about Brothers and Sisters; I remember it getting good reviews, if it's on Prime I will have a go as I'm going to give up on Outlander so need another series to get in to.
Netflix only, I'm less sure. I did enjoy the Australian comedy The Letdown, but it's more comedy than drama.
I read though that This is Us series 2 won't be long now so you can look forward to that!

Olivesandwine · 06/09/2018 18:39

Oh I really want to watch Parenthood and Brothers and Sisters but I've only got Netflix as my extra.
I do love This is Us and think it finishes next week Sad

We've just got into suits and are 3 seasons in within 2 weeks. Also loving Ozark

TwistedStitch · 06/09/2018 18:44

I've just finished season 1 of The Sinner on Netflix, it was gripping.

Blankiefan · 06/09/2018 23:00

The Good Wife is fab

PawneeParksDept · 06/09/2018 23:12

So seeing as the OP only has Netflix

Let's stick to that

Drama

Good Girls
Power
Gilmore Girls
Safe ?

Parenthood sadly is perfect for what you want but not streaming anywhere in the UK

It's the natural predecessor to This Is Us but some might say Parenthood is a descendant of Gilmore Girls

(People recommending series on services the OP doesn't have is a massive pet hate of mine)

PawneeParksDept · 06/09/2018 23:13

Oh and comedy

The Good Place
Grace and Frankie

Bubblemagic11 · 06/09/2018 23:17

Jack Ryan on Prime, really good!

YouBoggleMyMind · 06/09/2018 23:30

Grey's Anatomy Smile

PawneeParksDept · 06/09/2018 23:50

Fucksake Hmm

I swear to God this happens on every such thread and it drives me wild. I don't know why it annoys me as much as it does but it's my number one MN hate

OP : I only have Netflix

Response This! On Prime!

OP I have Netflix and Prime

Response This! On Sky!

And once when someone had all 3; people honest to God recommended things not yet even airing on any legal UK service

I think its a conspiracy Grin

Sorry to slightly derail

Sierra259 · 06/09/2018 23:53

Sons of Anarchy

Olivesandwine · 07/09/2018 07:06

Pawnee Grin
I've watched all of Gilmore Girls, Grace and Frankie and safe. Also seen sons of anarchy.
I'll look out for Power.

Thanks for the suggestions.

pawnee This is Us is it seems on All4, Netflix and Prime, it's easy to get confused. Then some series come to different services at different times. I watched The Staircase on iPlayer as part of the Storyville documentaries ages ago and as a fellow Leslie Knope fan, first saw P&R on BBC4. Likewise, the Good Wife/Fight were on Channel4 as well as Prime. I'd rather have the names of good series to remember whenever they do come to the service I have. Hope you find something to get in to soon Olives, I am waiting for season 3 of the Good Place and Season 2 of the OA. Also loved The Sinner as mentioned above by someone - all Netflix, promise!

Vitalogy · 08/09/2018 08:09

Rectify.

PawneeParksDept · 08/09/2018 11:17

This Is Us Series 1 is on Prime

This Is Us Series 2 - Channel 4 have first dibs so episodes will expire on all 4, as it goes along and then be available in full on Prime once Channel 4 has finished airing

This Is Us is not available on Netflix in the UK because Prime have the UK streaming rights.

What I'm talking about is not genuine confusion over service provider but people who will state titles knowing that what they are suggesting is not available to the OP.

Justonemoremojito · 17/10/2018 13:38

The Americans on Amazon is so good

butterfly56 · 17/10/2018 14:05
