My Descent into Netflix Nihilism - those damned algorithms!

Anyone else finding they are living a life of TV grunge and nihilism thanks to those ‘too clever by half’ algorithms? I watched few gritty sci fi and cop shows. Now it seems to push more & more grimness. Watching more only encourages it. I have to actively seek out cheery, uplifting content through ‘Categories’. Or is everyone else equally afflicted with post-apocalytic disaster grimness, grimy sci-fi and rain-sodden miserablist detective shows? What’s the cure? What do I need to ‘thumbs up’ to bring back the sunshine? I’m not sure my psyche can take a long winter of this.

Watch

Set It Up
The Kissing Booth
Gilmore Girls

and

The Good Place

That should swing your Recs to happier things.

I've noticed my neighbour gets recd things I didn't have a clue were on there as she watches more comedy

A similar thing happens to me. If I'm not careful, my Netflix account becomes an echo chamber of sci-fi and subtitled European crime drama.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 06/08/2018 22:10

My son uses my account(everyone else uses the others) My recs are:Trailer Park Boys, Always sunny in Philadelphia and Anime. All of which I hate. I like to skew it with some Ru Paul and Queer Eye.
It's a battle of algorithms.

I thought the whole of Netlix was grim.

SummersB · 06/08/2018 22:22

I’m in a similar position. Thanks MrStark for the suggestions!

Those sharing an account, remember that you can set up multiple profiles on the same acct, so that you aren't contaminating one another's recommendations!

I tried Gimore Girls and The Good Place - they weren’t my thing.

The Kissing Booth was troublesome - too much time on MN meant I found the huge older boyfriend with anger management problems and possessiveness an issue. Plus the male best friend going all judgey and slut shaming his BFF when he was in a relationship too seemed petulant, jealous and hypocritical. A nasty misogynistic undercurrent sprinkled with sunshine and pixie dust.

Maybe the algorithms are right & I’ve found my misanthropic, pessimistic level. 🤷‍♂️

Seqkat-that what I mean, profiles. But we've run out, so ds1 shares mine.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 07/08/2018 13:04

Good Girls maybe?

Our kids have a ‘Kids’ profile but also use DH’s, which I share, so it’s a surprising melee of bleak/dystopian awfulness, teen anime, Aussie mermaid series (thanks DS2!), high school movies, family films, arty/science/origami documentaries, rom coms, subtitled stuff. However, as the resident insomniac and key consumer, my tastes set the general mood (dark).
