I have a rare day to myself. I usually fall upon Pride & Prejudice (BBC Jennifer Ehle version). I remember liking the BBC version of Vanity Fair and Wives and Daughters but haven't seen them since they first aired. Any other ideas or should I resign myself to an afternoon of wine and Colin Firth (there is no right or wrong here)

Geraldine McEwan and Prunella Scales IIRC

I liked the Anna Karenina with Helen McCrory, because it had Douglas Henshall as an excellent Levin. Probably good performances all round, but that's the one that's stuck.

Oh God the Geraldine Mc and Prue Scales version of Mapp and Lucia is AMAZING!!!!! The 2 main actors couldn't be improved IMO.

Good news Grin DH has managed to get hold of Lady Susan for me. we're going to watch it this aft Grin. We can't go out in this heat!

Just seen Lady S. it's quite amusing. It' s easy to see that JA was very young when she wrote it! One large mistake; to give Lady Susan a tan (no Lady at that time in the 178Os\90s, or before, up till the late 1920s had allowed themselves to get a suntan!)

Taking a turn backwards about 400 years or so, can I put a word in for the incredible series the Hollow Crown?

(Benedict C is superb as Richard 3rd)

DarlingNikita · 05/08/2018 17:19

Oh, yes, that's very good. The Richard II, Henry IV etc one is good too, with Ben Whishaw and Tom Hiddleston.

I love a period drama!!!

Pride and prejudice (obviously)
Cranford was lovely. Still one of my favourite.

ppeatfruit · 05/08/2018 17:48

Oh I just remembered the loveliest film it's called "Brightstar" I think with the gorgeous Ben Wishaw as Keats, it's so clever, atmospheric, sad and beautiful. Worth looking out for . I dare anyone to watch without crying buckets !

Yes I love Cranford too and P&P. I preferred the book of Larkrise to Candleford than the TV series.

SlipperyVixen · 06/08/2018 17:40

I've just remembered a film too - A Summer Story - with James Wilby and Imogen Stubbs. I remember being moved to tears and I never cry. Never.

There is a Russian adaptation of Catherine the greats life on amazon prime called Ekatrina. It has subtitles but I am enjoying it.

I like Kiera Knightlys P&p too.

Can the last of the Mohicans go in this list?

And the remains of the day.
