Long lost family new series starts tonight!

Anyone else looking forward to the new series of long lost family starting tonight? A friend said to me yesterday that she doesn't understand why I love all those sob stories! Well I don't view them as sob stories at all and I absolutely love this programme! I love seeing people being reunited with their loved ones. I know sometimes it doesn't always work out the way they had hoped but in general I think most people are glad that they at least got some answers. I also think it's filmed with empathy and understanding and not over dramatised either. I like the theme music for the current advert too (Take on me, Aha unplugged if anyone is interested!). I also think it must be great for someone who is an only child to discover they have siblings! I know I'm probably sounding like I work for ITV now but I promise you I don't but it's on at 9:30pm!

Shouldn't this be in TV? Or Chat?

Leesa65 · 17/07/2018 14:33

I like to watch this.

When my mum was unmarried and pregnant, in the 60s, the priest tried to talk her into having me adopted . Luckily, my parents were engaged anyway and simply brought their wedding forward a bit , and neither had ever thought of that anyway . was the Priests idea. Flatly turned down and I am glad it was.

If I HAD been adopted I don't know if I would have looked for them, it was the road not ever needed to take .

Yes greenlavender it should be in TV as posted here by accident! How do I move it?

I best get the tissues out. There's no other programme makes me cry like this one. All those poor mothers who had to give their babies up. What awful cruel times they were..

Butterfly98 · 17/07/2018 15:07

Leesa65 so glad for you xx It would have been heartbreaking for your Mum and Dad if they were persuaded to give you up for adoption.

Yes Coolncalm my parents were in their 20's during the 1960's and have often mentioned people they knew during that era who had to give up their babies for adoption or were made to feel ashamed. So glad that the world has moved on since then

Butterfly98, I'll report this thread to MNHQ to ask them to move it over to Telly Addicts (here it is, FYI www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts!)

But, yes, as an adoptee from an era when many many young women were coerced into giving up their babies for adoption, as I'm sure my BM was, I've been glued to this series of programmes since it first started. And, yes, I cry a lot of the time. As does DP - who wasn't adopted!

Butterfly98 · 17/07/2018 15:18

Thank you PanPanPanPing and yes it really does pull at the heartstrings, I'm the same as your DH and I'm not adopted either!

The two that stick in my memory are the one linked to Wilfred Owen and the one in the last series with the deaf lady.
Every episode without fail reduces me to 😭!!!!!

AnyaMumsnet · 17/07/2018 16:28

Hi there everyone,

Looks like this thread was started in the wrong place so we'll be moving it to Telly Addicts shortly.

Butterfly98 · 17/07/2018 18:32

84Charingcrossroad I have some favourite episodes too, in particular the one in series 4 about Louise from Bradford who had never met her French Dad. Her parents had met as teenagers when her Mum was an au pair in France for a year but he didn't feel ready to be a Dad so she went back to UK to have the baby. When LLF tracked him down and Davina went over to France, the scenery of the Alps was lovely and it was great that she could speak to him in French too as Davina's mother was French. It worked out really well and I could really see the resemblance between father and daughter

Love it. Tissues at the ready!

Highfever · 17/07/2018 18:49

Really looking forward to it . Nicky and one if the adoptees was on this morning earlier.

PanPanPanPing · 17/07/2018 19:38

The French dad and his daughter really worried me. Not him, but her.

There is a thing called genetic sexual attraction which can happen between a 'child' (but then adult) who then meets their parent of the opposite sex for the first time. I used to belong to NORCAP (sadly now demised) and subscribed to their newsletters - there were a couple of articles in the newsletters about this situation.

When I watched the LLF about those two, many years ago, I worried that she might have been falling into that trap. Him too, possibly?

Sorry, but some reunions aren't as wonderful as they seem.

Accountant222 · 17/07/2018 21:31

I love it, it's the only thing ever that makes me cry

84CharingCrossRoad · 17/07/2018 21:59

Mum and Dad found! My eyes are leaking!

squirrelnutkins1 · 17/07/2018 22:05

@PanPanPanPing what???!

Butterfly98 · 17/07/2018 22:30

Wow just wow really! What a great episode to start the series with, so happy for them all!

The Colombian family had me blubbing like a baby 😭

84CharingCrossRoad · 17/07/2018 22:47

Wow Pearse and his half brother looked like twins!!!

Butterfly98 · 17/07/2018 23:10

Yes I thought they could be twins too!

Good episode.

I was seriously distracted by how high Davina had that roll neck sweater when she was telling the lady they’d found her parents, she looked like a worried tortoise.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 18/07/2018 01:27

Yes ArmySal

I've just watched it and came here to comment about the jumper

It looked like it was eating her and she was trying to save what was left of her face!

PanPanPanPing · 18/07/2018 09:53

@squirrelnutkins1

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_sexual_attraction. I'd never heard of it until I read a few stories in the NORCAP newsletters (parts of the newsletters had RL stories of reunions - some successful, some not).

I loved the Columbian reunion last night. I gasped when the BM introduced her husband who turned out to be the BF - and then started blubbing.

Butterfly98 · 18/07/2018 11:29

Yes ArmySal Davina's jumper didn't do anything for her, you hit the nail on the head with it looking tortoise like! Btw did anyone else think she's lost far too much weight or maybe she's worked out too much but her faces looks so thin now
