Anyone else watching this?

So much for freeing the women of Afghanistan, the attitudes of the men is horrendous but Cherie Blair and Laura Bush failed in their intention. Oh what a surprise.

Sad that the girls school has no money to rebuild.

They are concentrating on infant mortality rates. Interesting that the mother-in-laws are coming off as a big a problem as these womens' husbands.

The MIL attitude is a huge prob IMO....its as if by accepting any form of change, they are denigrating the way they lived their lives, but that isn't the case at all....

Would also like to point out it isn't Islamic at all, this treatment of women!

Was there a time when women in Afghanistan were ever allowed freedom I wonder? By that I mean freedom not to have to cover themselves completely, freedom not to feel so trapped in a marriage the only way out they see is self-immolation, freedom over their own bodies.

I don't know.... I should imagine so though...

Am currently reading the latest Robert Fisk book about the Mid East....was a great chapter about Afghanistan and history, but obv not much about the women.....

heart wrenching

Its awful...hate men hiding behind Islam in order to subjugate women...its soooo wrong and gives it all a bad name!

As you said though Nikki, this doesn't seem to be, as in some countries, a misinterpretation of Islam but a deeper mental state.

Do women who were abused by their mothers-in-law then see it as their turn when they become one? What are such women teaching their sons in how to treat women? It is an ongoing cycle of abuse.

That's interesting...I had hell from my MIL in the beginning (she's Syrian) and it was awful but....now I've had DS, although I'd want a woman that looks after him as well as I do....I wouldn't be as nasty as she was though.....

Does seem to be a pattern though - its same in Greece/Spain etc - you get a dogs life from the MIL so you do same when you are one - seems to be a ritual! Although being moaned at for not sweeping the doorstep every day is nowhere near as bad as what women go through in Afghanistan!!
