An officer from tv licencing just came to my house. I cancelled my tv licence because i only use netflix, youtube etc and have my ariel unplugged from the tv.
I let him in because i wanted to show that the ariel is unplugged. He then asked me to turn on my tv to show him if i used iplayer. I refused to do this as i consider that a violation of privacy. He then went on his way, was fairly pleasant and explained use of iplayer required a tv licence.
Now im worried, can i be prosecuted for refusing to put my tv on for him?

I’m sure there’s no law saying you have to switch on the TV for other people just because they asked. Grin

I wouldn’t worry about it but also would’t have let that man in to check. All you need to do it tell him you don’t require a licence.

I had the TV licencing people come round 20 years ago when I first moved in to my house. I hadn't sorted out my licence yet so he cautioned me on my doorstep that I had 7 (I think) days to get one.

I don't know if things have changed but I'd assume that you'd still have had to have been cautioned today if he was planning to prosecute you.

i do hope its ok, was just worried that my refusal to switch on tv may be interpreted as some admission of guilt. All he did was explain that licence was needed for iplayer, i guess he thought i was lying im not sure. I just rang tv licencing to make sure, and they said it all sounded fine.

Well bybthat logic they would ask you to put on every TV phone and tablet and laptop and check your history. My TV has iplayer as default app don’t think I can delete it anyway.

Are they planning on making you add a number to watch? Bit pointless at moment just asking on iplayer without making you give your name or postcode
