Why doesn't Buffy get paid?

After she comes back from the dead and she is in financial trouble and it all adds to the stress and Giles gives her a cheque it occurred to me that as a watcher he gets paid (Buffy got them to give him his job back and a salary was mentioned then) so why does the slayer not get paid when they have one that lives through school age? It would have made life a lot easier. Do they expect an adult slayer to get a job and still be slayer? They must know she has to support herself.

Also. The death thing. She had a grave so clearly had been properly buried and everything but they were using the Buffy bot to pretend she was alive including pretending she was looking after dawn. But if she had a grave she was legally dead so how come that didn't come up with regards to who was caring for dawn? They cared enough to set social workers on her later so clearly dawn was in the system and it wasn't some dawn isn't really real so isn't in the system thing.

I think that having no money was the least of her challenges.
I also want to know why social services didn't intervene with Harry Potter when his clothes and Dudley's clothes at school were so obviously in a different state of repair and yet they lived in the same house.

They rarely had a Slayer who survived beyond 18, and in the past most of them would simply live with their Watcher or similar. Mortgages are rather a new thing!

The fact of Buffy's death was hidden from most people and vampires - that's why the grave was hidden in the woods.

Surely Giles shouldn't still be getting paid considering Buffy technically died in the first season. So Kendra and her watcher should have gotten paid.

Your right, the watchers council had very plush offices and looked like they could have easily afforded giving Buffy and Faith salaries.

Social services did come round eventually after Joyce died - only it was after Buffy had died and come back.

No poor Dawn. The shark was well and truly jumped with that shit story line. Dawn was so annoying. Dropped into the show and then we were just supposed to think ah Joss Whedon is sooo clever.... Faith alluded to Dawn’s arrival when she was in the coma. Balls to that. Utter crap!

She used to piss me off but I've been feeling sorry for her on this rewatch. She has to cope with the not being real thing, loses her mum loses her sister, has to pretend sister is still alive and live with a robot version, gets sister back who is completely disinterested and is constantly told she's too young to know stuff or be involved in stuff when her sister was right in the thick of it at her age.

All watchers get paid regardless of whether they are actively watching the slayer ( there are alchemists on the boards of directors - but they still make the watchers fly coach - miserly bastards. And they wouldn't pay Wesley's air fare home once he got fired.)
Giles is paid until season 3 'helpless' when he gets fired. But he must have been getting paid a lot as he has the money to doss around unemployed for a year and then buy the magic shop. He gets reinstated in season 5 'checkpoint' when he gets paid retroactively from the date of his firing.

They don't pay the slayer because the council are fighting a war and she is their weapon - you don't pay your sword. And they actively try to kill the slayer when she comes of age because they'd rather have an inexperienced, naive and easily controlled girl do the job than an experienced woman in charge of her own power... even though that makes no sense in terms of having the best weapon available...But then having only one girl in all the world do the job doesn't make much sense either...
The watchers council are very dark and disturbing and borderline evil, themselves. Much more interested in power than actually protecting the world to the best of their ability. I don't have much time for Giles or Wesley, I'm afraid.

Dawn isn't in Hush - it's a season 4 episode.
I'm team Dawn - she does through such a ridiculous amount of trauma in such a small space of time and at such an unbelievably young age - and she's still standing!

Hank Summers is the ultimate deadbeat dad. He lives in Spain with his secretary and doesn't even get in touch with them when Joyce dies. They don't even bother to tell him Buffy is dead. Although in fairness to him - he has never actually met Dawn!
