I've just finished the 3rd book and season 4, which are pretty much at the same point. However I'm wondering how different series 5 is to book 4? Can I watch the series and still be surprised at the book? Or will it completely spoil it? No spoilers if possible please.

Yes you can watch or read first I think. I’ve seen all of the TV show but am on book five (listening to audiobooks on commute). It’s different in places now - mostly the Ramsay Bolton stuff.

I personally wouldn’t have watched the tv show before I got up to date with the books.

I think you need to know the real story in order to really enjoy the show (though of course the show is amazing, it’s not even a patch on the books).

And yes, while the tv series does diverge from the books in part, in others it doesn’t, so you will be spoilered.

Thanks, I think I've decided to wait until I've got spare money for the next book. I'm just really impatient though lol.

However a few things in the TV series are definitely spoilers for books not yet published (and these are plot twists which are unquestionably going to be the same in the books eventually). So if you’re going to wait until you’ve read the books so you don’t get spoiled you may have a long long wait ahead.
