Is black mirror scary?

mayaknew · 02/01/2018 12:25

I've never watched it because Im a wimp and I hate scary/thriller stuff.

But I love futuristic dystopian type tv/books so I think I would like black mirror as long as it's not scary.

I started to watch the one in the warehouse with the robot guard dog and decided I'd stop watching (for the time being - I'll go back to it).

Having done a lot of OLD I found the dating one interesting. If only it was all guaranteed to lead to a good and lasting match! That one was more positive than the reality. Ok they wanted to go rogue but in real life, OLD doesn't come with a plan or a guarantee that you're learning as you go along..

You know, I just realised I haven't watched Shut up and Dance. Shock missed it out when someone said it was too disturbing and thrn forgot to go back to it.

Know what I'm watching tonight.

EnidButton · 02/01/2018 21:52

I'd just start watching one OP

You're at risk of spoilers on here and they are best if you don't know what's coming as there are often twists and surprises. It's all very cleverly written and much better to go in cold without knowing any details.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 02/01/2018 21:59

White Bear I found really disturbing, I really wish I'd never watched it because it plays on my mind a lot, it's like my worst nightmare. However my dh thought the episode was quite boring and not at all troubling, so it depends what your own fears are.

San Junipero is wonderful and not at all scary.
I loved Fifty million merits, really enjoyed watching it. A few unpleasant bits but it didn't trouble me afterwards.
The entire history of you I enjoyed too. Again not disturbing, just interesting.

TheBrilloPad · 02/01/2018 22:01

OP, when I want to watch something but am concerned it might be too scary, I go onto IMDB and search for it, then scroll down to "parents guide". It has headings violence & gore/ sex & nudity/profanities: frightening & intense scenes etc and let's you decide if you want to watch it then, cos you can know what the scary bits are before you start! It's a bit of a spoiler really, but I find it lets me relax because I know what the scary bit will be as soon as it starts!

Santasbigredbobblehat · 03/01/2018 07:58

White Bear is one of the ones I can’t erase from my mind. And White Christmas.
Sam Junipero is delightful.

falange · 03/01/2018 08:22

Just been reminded of White Bear. That is the worst/best one. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterwards.

ForFuckSakeSusan · 03/01/2018 16:00

I've changed my mind, I had forgotten all about White Bear, probably tried to erase it from memory. It's a horrible episode, really disturbing - I would never watch it again and pretty sure I watched it from behind a pillow originally.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 03/01/2018 16:39

Yes, White Bear was the one that really stuck with me. Very uncomfortable viewing and something that felt very believable to me which made it so much worse.

gamerchick · 03/01/2018 17:56

I thought white bear was bloody well done. In fact I think I might watch it again tonight Grin

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 03/01/2018 18:08

So well done- that's why it was terrifying!

I'm watching the first episode of s4 now...

DGRossetti · 03/01/2018 18:32

I find it's more scary in your head, than in reality, if that makes sense. Clever direction and acting.

For example, in "Arkangel", the repeated scenes where people are making smoothies with a blender ... absolutely nothing nasty happens at all. But there's a very clever tension.

(Anyone who likes this sort of stuff should check out the BBCs pitch perfect adaptations of M.R. James stories www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/group/p05rm22d - the docu with Mark Gatiss is fun too.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 03/01/2018 22:04

Just watched hang the dj , which I enjoyed, not at all scary/ worrying

Really like the tip about the imdb parental guide
Although not sure why I'm such a wimp now, I used to love horror movies as a teen :)

Are there any other good episodes in the most recent series for scaredy cats?

ForFuckSakeSusan · 03/01/2018 22:26

The first, USS Callister, is absolutely fine Gu, I'd also say Metalhead is fine but really rather dull, very disappointing among such good episodes! Black Museum is brilliant but could see that some people might find parts disturbing, it hasn't played on my mind like White Bear did though, it's just a bit gross in parts.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 03/01/2018 23:18

It’s fine OP

I can’t watch horror or gore but this is OK 👌🏾

I am the same am
Almost phobic about gore horror
