I couldn’t get into the book but watched last night mainly because I was bored. Really enjoyed it. There’s such a strong and oppressive atmosphere and the casting, acting, costumes and set are so good. I didn’t predict Johannes situation (don’t want to be specific in case of spoilers) and have no idea how it’s going to develop or end which is great. I hate predictable stories. I didn’t expect to find it as absorbing as I did. Look g forward to part 2.

“they might have stepped straight out of the paintings by the Flemish Masters“

Exactly what I think. It’s so beautiful to look at but I’m finding it so sloooooooooow.

WipsGlitter · 27/12/2017 17:23

Loved the book and the adaptation!

Firenight · 27/12/2017 17:25

I really couldn’t get into the book so hoping this is more accessible. Didn’t manage to watch last night as our TV signal went but I will get round to it.

Hulder · 27/12/2017 20:36

Was really excited at the start as it looked stunning and Romola Garai was excellent.

By the end I was really only hanging on to see the dolls house pieces opened, it was so disappointing.

Plot didn't seem worth the amazing art direction and acting going on. I'm guessing from those who didn't like the book that the plot is crap.

thegrinchreaper · 27/12/2017 20:51

I hope the end is more satisfying than the book- which was disappointing as I had such high hopes and all that goddamn sugar talk was wearing.
It makes for a lovely looking TV adaptation, though.

WipsGlitter · 27/12/2017 21:18

It's beautifully shot. Subtle tones.

AnyFucker · 27/12/2017 21:27

Is the 2nd part tonight then ?

BitOfFun · 27/12/2017 21:32

Yes, it's on now, Anyfucker.

I think this is one of the rare occasions where the adaptation surpasses the book. There were real issues with the pacing in the book, from what I remember, but I've found this to be much better.

CandyMelts · 27/12/2017 21:35

Yup didn't enjoy the book but much preferring this

Valerrie · 27/12/2017 21:40

I found the book tedious but the adaptation is beautiful.

AnyFucker · 27/12/2017 21:47

Am watching something else. Will catch up on IPlayer tomorrow.

2rebecca · 27/12/2017 22:22

It just sort of stopped.

Muffinbutton · 27/12/2017 22:26

That ending was a bit disappointing. Was that the same as the book?

thegrinchreaper · 27/12/2017 22:57

If I recall, the book doesn't even feature the miniaturist, which was quite infuriating for a book called 'The Miniaturist'!

VanillaMincePie · 27/12/2017 23:08

grinchreaper - you're joking! No miniaturist character in the book???? That's like setting The Jungle Book in the Sahara. Confused

WipsGlitter · 27/12/2017 23:11

I don't think she ever meets the miniaturist she's just at a "presence" in the book.

EllaHen · 27/12/2017 23:23

Well, she should have remained a 'presence'.

Second part wasn't as good as the first part.

It ended rather abruptly.

Lambside · 27/12/2017 23:23

I hadn't read the book but was looking for something interesting to watch.
I loved the costumes, they looked very authentic. Several seemed to be based on actual Flemish paintings as did some of the characters, Jack in particular.
I enjoyed the plot though I could guess some of the twists.
Thought the ending a bit flat but feel a sequel may be a strong possibility.

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2017 01:15

I don't think she ever meets the miniaturist she's just at a "presence" in the book

No, she doesn't which was one of the reasons why the book was so infuriating and tedious along with repetitive descriptions of walks from the house to the warehouse/market/miniaturist's house The miniaturist was just a device to tell a story but you were left with a "have I missed something?" feeling.

youngestisapsycho · 28/12/2017 08:35

www.radiotimes.com/news/2017-12-26/heres-why-theres-a-major-difference-between-the-miniaturist-book-and-tv-adaptation/

This explains why the miniaturist is in the tv adaptions and not the book.

LEMtheoriginal · 28/12/2017 08:44

I thought I remembered the miniturist from the book. But it is a vague memory. I was disappointed by the ending of both book and tv. As someone said. It just seemed to stop.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/12/2017 08:47

Ah, OK, they've added an explanation about the sugar as well, which wasn't on the book.

Except I got bored when watching and missed it, which is a shame because that's the only thing I wanted to know.

Still, very pretty to look at, even though I was a bit Hmm at the opening scenes and the beautiful clean pavements.

LEMtheoriginal · 28/12/2017 08:48

I was hoping for a plot twist - there wasn't one

Lambside · 28/12/2017 09:27

The main character kept reminding me of one of these dolls
