Impact of violent cartoons on children

Hello,

I'm a 19 year old film student, and am currently working on a screenplay for a short film which focuses on the impact of violence in media on children. I wanted to come here in order to conduct some research firsthand onto whether or not you'd noticed violent cartoons (such as Tom and Jerry) influencing your children in any way. With a younger brother myself I know he'd sometimes like to imitate what he saw on TV or in films, and would often have a new obsession weekly. I wondered if this was a common theme, and if violence on TV and in video games and such has a detrimental effect on children growing up, or whether theres other things to play as well.

I really appreciate anyone who takes the time to reply to this, and hopefully we can open up a little discussion around this topic.

Just boosting this up again

In all honestly, I don't think there are many violent cartoons for younger children (mine are 2 and 4).

My daughters mainly watch CBeebies and there isn't anything aggressive on there at all. They also watch Blaze and Paw Patrol which are more about friendship and problem solving.

The closest to actual cartoons with fighting/violence is probably more like Zak Storm or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and my daughters haven't imitated those (just watched tranfixed!)

I can see a case that cartoons from the past (Tom and Jerry, Roadrunner, etc) showed violence, but I do wonder if we have moved on since then - as well as rejecting the inherent racial stereotyping! 😂

I think you need to focus on a particular cartoon/age group that you feel has an aggressive tone/message if you want more responses. I don't think toddlers these days would watch the sort of vintage cartoons you refer to.
