I've just watched this and found it quite an eye opener. As a natural thinny I've always been unsympathetic to fat people "eat less, do more, pull yourself together!" but seeing this poor girl struggling made me see it very differently.

Just thought I'd share!

She came across as such a sweet, intelligent girl. I thought her mother was utterly useless - completely in denial baout being in any way responsible for the state her daughter found herself in. I am also astonished that the surgeon who finally treated her did not immediately recommend counselling rather than waiting until 9 months after the op.

MoosMa · 15/04/2007 22:33

I thought exactly the same franke, the mother was actually trying to persuade her to eat crisps and pizza!

Did she had Prader-Wili?

How'd she get so big at such a young age?

MoosMa · 16/04/2007 07:51

No she didn't. She ate too much. She was always big then when she was 12 her Grandma died and she put on 8 stone in 1 year and got into a habit of comfort eating. It was only after she had a load of her stomach removed (90% I think) and eventually got counselling that she lost a huge amount of weight. She was still pretty large at the end of it but no longer life-threateningly so.

I so wish I'd been able to watch the end of this, but dd1 had to go to bed. Agree that her mum taking her to a supermarket and asking if she'd like some low-fat crisps was crap.

How did she get on in the end? She really was such a pretty girl, despite her weight.

MummyPenguin · 16/04/2007 09:26

Was this the 6 months on one? I saw her on the original programme. Felt very sorry for her.

MoosMa · 16/04/2007 12:01

It was the 6 months on one, I can't remember how much she lost in the end, I think she got down to about 21 stone and seemed so much happier and healthier I'd like to see her again in another year or so to see if she kept it up.

Yes her mum was weird, kept saying she'd eaten too much junk etc, but I thought as long as she was loosing weight and trying surely that was good! She was always trying to force rubbish down her too, she could have easily got some nice things for her to try.

franke · 16/04/2007 12:12

Her mother said she can't manage vegetables because she can't digest them properly so it's easier to have a biscuit or some crisps instead, ffs.

Her mother had basically told her when she was 13 and had put on another 8 stone, that it was her (the daughter's) problem and she would have to deal with it on her own.

MoosMa · 16/04/2007 13:26

I can't believe a banana's harder to digest than a packet of crisps. I was ing and shouting at the telly!
