I'm going to have a bit of a feminist mini-rant about how this series has played out...
It seems that, yet again, female characters have been made to look stupid in order to serve the storylines of male characters in order that they look slightly less than stupid. Examples this series:
Ellaria/Yara are 'getting down to it' but have no lookouts on their fleet, thus allowing Euron's fleet to take them by surprise.
Olenna Tyrell sits, seemingly all alone, in Highgarden just waiting for the Lannisters to invade. Her answer - fighting isn't their thing. Come on! We're talking House Tyrell here and one of the strongest fortified castles in Westeros. Loras Tyrell was one of the best fighters in the book series!
Daenerys makes a madwoman decision to roast both Tarlys and not take them as POWs, in order to make Tyrion appear humane and sensible. This is Tyrion we're talking about - you know, the person who set fire to the Blackwater Rush.
Sansa is made to look like a bitch for suggesting that Umber and Karstark lands be stripped from them for their treason. Jon, lovely compassionate Jon, thinks the children should not be punished. Have we all forgotten Olly? Have both of them forgotten about taking wards/hostages and giving up some of the family assets which was the done thing in Westeros?
However, the grand prize for character assassination must go to......
Sansa and Arya for both being made to look utterly stupid in order to prolong the storyline of a useless and pointless LIttlefinger. It's truly nauseating.
It happened again last season when Sansa was written to withhold her knowledge of the knight of the Vale from Jon in order to create dramatic tension. Without the Knights, Jon would have been dead. If she had told him about them, the battle strategy would have been totally different. Either way, he cocked up the battle and she was made to look power hungry. Result - he is declared King in the North. Yuck.
Why do us female viewers stand here throwing rocks at female characters where we should be throwing rocks at B&W? GRRM does not write his female characters like this. This misogynistic writing is so wonderfully appealing to a misogynistic audience and too few people call the writers to task on it and instead blame the female characters.
At the moment, the only 'intelligent' female character is Cersei, which is ironic because she's completely stupid in the books.
Prize for the most stupid character this season has to go to Tyrion.
Idiotic moves of his include:
- invading a useless Casterly Rcok
- stopping Daenerys from simply taking out the Red Keep and thus ending the war in one swift move
- let's find proof of the 'threat' beyond the Wall
I am not looking forward to season 8.
