Spinoffery gone MAD

"The Royal" is to spin off into "The Royal Today" - is this to be ITV's answer to "Doctors"?

"Casualty 1906" is to get a full series following the pilot.

"Holby" is to get a spinoff - "Holby Blue". You guessed it, a police series.

I despair. Where's the new? The original?

And what next? Maybe everything will now have to be a spinoff from an existing programme. "New Street Cops"? Or "Pupils", the other side of "Teachers"? Or "Judy and Max", in which we see what they do when the Tweenies aren't around?

very rarely anything novel or innovative on tv this day.

We only have one for dvds and cbeebies (ok apart from Hotel BAbylon I know its crap but I like it).

UnquietDad · 27/03/2007 13:29

coming soon: "B&B Babylon"

there is a lot of decent comedy mind you

Peep Show
Never mind the Buzzcocks
Mock the Week (fantastic!)

and that new one about the rush hour (Rush Hour?)

beckybrastraps · 27/03/2007 13:31

Actually, I've often wondered about the Max and Judy back-story...

I always moan about spin offs, and then am reminded that Frasier was one, and I loved Frasier.

UnquietDad · 27/03/2007 13:32

"Granny Murray: The Early Years"

Look I used to be a chambermaid, right. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it

Comedy is good and there has been some good stuff, but they hide it and don't advertise it properly so no one knows.

HAted peep show though.

I hate the reality crap, amount soaps are on and programmes that died years ago and are still being churned out.

There's some good stuff, but channels seem to get one programme and keep repeating it until you are insane.

UnquietDad · 27/03/2007 13:38

I can't really complain about spinoffery as I enjoyed "Torchwood" and "Sarah Jane"!

It is surely time for casualty (and holby for that matter) to die a death?

TheArmadillo · 27/03/2007 13:40

'Torchwood'

That was terrible

UnquietDad · 27/03/2007 13:55

TW got better towards theend. And it's coming back!

I watched the first double episode and was disgusted.

It couldn't have really got worse could it

southeastastra · 27/03/2007 14:00

we need something here like HBO just dedicated to making good tv we could sell worldwide.

UnquietDad · 27/03/2007 14:03

"Casualty 1906" is going to give them all ideas, believe me. ("The Bill, 1942" anyone? Spivs and rationing and black-marketeers in Blitz-torn London?)

That combined with the success of "Life On Mars" is going to make retro the new cool.

Apparently there are quite a few 80s-based shows coming - people in their 30s and 40s with families are the biggest TV watchers now, and they're all trying to appeal to us.

sea - that sounds like a good idea. Isn't it what the bbc is supposed to be though? Not ratings-chasing, but developing quality tv programmes. DOn't get me wrong, they have done some good stuff, but there's loads of crap as well. They get the license fee, so shouldn't have to chase ratings, they even get to advertise to raise extra revenue.

I'll hold my opinion on the 1980s spinoffs until I see them

SueBaroo · 27/03/2007 15:38

Torchwood was, sadly, well below par. I wanted to love it, and I tried every week, but I just couldn't. Spin-offs can work if the concept, scripting and acting are all top-notch, like Frasier.

The best Torchwood episode was the one in Dead Ringers..
