Thinking about watching this as we've run out of things to watch but is it good? It sounds a bit depressing?

It is both good, and a bit depressing.

CMOTDibbler · 02/07/2017 22:06

Its absolutely amazing, but if you want uplifting, funny, or feelgood, it's totally not for you.

TheweewitchRoz · 06/07/2017 23:26

It's fantastic but really makes you think (& despair somewhat at the shit deal women get).

ArtyFartyQueen · 06/07/2017 23:27

Yes it's absolutely brilliant, the type of telly where I am on the edge of my seat watching and count down the days to when it's on again!

viques · 07/07/2017 00:07

Have to agree with all of the above. Stunning re interpretation of the original, they have added bits that fit so well with the original I think Attwood must have suggested them! The fact that she did a cameo makes me think she was closely involved with the production. I wondered how they were going to stretch it to 10 episodes, am now wishing they had done 20.

oldtrees · 07/07/2017 00:09

Margaret Attwood was an executive producer I think.

Crinkle77 · 07/07/2017 16:04

It's brilliant. Yes it's dark but it's compelling viewing.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 07/07/2017 17:10

Cannot recommend highly enough.

Powerful, thought-provoking and unsettling. (I have to decompress straight after by watching something lighthearted and mindless).

Wonderful acting, esp. from Elisabeth Moss.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 07/07/2017 17:12

I read the book after watching 2 episodes and I'm glad as I have the context. We're 6 episodes into the series and my husband is not following it at all! I'm enjoying it but it makes me feel uneasy at the same time

InDubiousBattle · 07/07/2017 17:13

It's very good. Elizabeth Moss is fantastic in it. You need to find your happy place though as it's not a comfortable watch.

ReinettePompadour · 07/07/2017 17:14

I watched it after getting loads of recommendations and I'm sorry its crap. Its depressing, questionable storylines and boring. If it doesn't grab me within the first 30 minutes I wont ever watch it again, Game of Thrones is another one that's overrated in my opinion. I'm still looking for something good to watch. Blush

histinyhandsarefrozen · 07/07/2017 17:17

It's brilliant and depressing. Great tv.

It's nothing to do with Chaucer (dunno where dsis got that from Smile]) and just because they're wearing bonnets doesn't mean it's a period drama Grin(df)!

FoofFighter · 07/07/2017 17:19

I'd really recommend it. I only started watching it after seeing my FB feed go wild, I'd never hear dof the book, nor of Attwood Blush

Yes it is depressing in a way, but it's also thought provoking, conversation starting and just excellently acted throughout. Also pretty damned scary to think that some of these things are happening already, and this is how society might end up not too far away if certain people in power are not stopped Sad

histinyhandsarefrozen · 07/07/2017 17:21

@viques you know they are making a second series!?

StormTreader · 07/07/2017 17:22

Its brilliant but quite bleak - dont expect superman to swoop in and save everyone in episode 3 :D

ShowgirlnamedLola · 07/07/2017 17:26

It probably doesn't help that I'm pregnant and a bit emosh, but I found it too harrowing. I've read the book and honestly didn't find it anywhere near as disturbing as the series. If you find things upsetting easily (I admit that I'm a wimp) then avoid!! I gave up mid way through ep 4

Chickydoo · 07/07/2017 18:53

Best thing on TV right now

AnnaNimmity · 07/07/2017 18:57

It's really good - best thing on tv at the moment. I do cry in most episodes though

leccybill · 07/07/2017 18:58

Where can I find it?

Chrisinthemorning · 07/07/2017 19:00

Yes I agree it's the best thing on just now.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 07/07/2017 20:37

@leccybill All4

Humpertydumpty · 07/07/2017 21:13

I avoided watching it because I had to study the book at A level and it ruined it for me. However, I started watching it last night and I'm on episode 7; it's bloody fantastic. School was 20 years ago so I can't remember the plot details but it really makes you think. Some of it is uncomfortably realistic and feasible...

FastAbsorbingCake · 07/07/2017 23:33

It's disturbingly depressingly brilliant.

DP is watching it too and finding it very difficult/disturbing. Even more so when we talked about it, the book and I told him that MA said she had included anything that hadn't been done to women at some point.

Trying not to give spoilers but the end of the episode where Ofglen was 'punished' I instantly got what had happened, he didn't and it had to be explained. Which lead to a deeper conversation ( this is so hard to explain without spoiling) but he had no idea…

Thank you for the replies - on ep 2 and loving it!

I would really like to start watching this, but Channel 4 are no longer listing Episodes 1 and 2 on catch up/4OD! Sad

Does anyone know how I can get hold of them please? Preferably without paying. We have Sky, Amazon Prime and a Kodi box thingy.
