Well got to watch it raced up to my mums and saw it there. I thought it was a great episode very different to what has come before given the change in circumstances for Reid and I am missing Drake but I think it is shaping up to be a lively and tense series. It was always quite gritty but seems to be getting grittier. Such a shame this will be it, I hope we are satisfied with how they finish it off.

LouiseBrooks · 20/06/2017 12:35

I watched it on Amazon (no spoilers, don't worry) but am now watching it again. The episodes shown on BBC are shorter and I was watching last night trying to remember what they'd cut out.

All I will say about what's to come is that this is a great series.

Clawdy · 20/06/2017 21:58

Gripping and fascinating as always. Normally I hate violent scenes, and this is full of 'em.....but I've loved every series, and will watch to the end. Missing Drake though.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 21/06/2017 14:20

Sorry to say this but I'm about to abandon it which is a shame because it used to be great.

The most recent episode/series we watched on t.v. on Monday night was just about non-sensical.

I can handle the Victorian way of speaking but they mumble and mutter and it's just about unwatchable. Leaving me thinking, 'what was that about ?'

In the most recent series: the Jerome Flynn character became a bare knuckle fighter and left the police. The other police bloke lost his way when his daughter drowned in his care and his wife never forgave him. He sought solace in the arms of another woman, and, well, that didn't exactly help his marriage.

Current series: He's now drinking hard liquor straight from the bottle. An old villain is now an officer at the police nick and employs questionable interrogation methods. The American pathologist is still around and declaring his love for the female he happens to be speaking to at the time. The affair partner/brothel madam is still around smirking/pulling faces and talking Victoriana. The episode ended after an illegal dog fight was broken up and the police bloke that is/isn't Drake ran away from trouble with a smile on his face, accompanied by someone I didn't recognize.

Anyone ?

Mathew Macfadyen has lost weight and the Victorian outfits really bring out the colour of his eyes.

Victorian costumes - who wore them best? It's frockcoat battle between Dove and whassissname the cute American.

Next week in the sidebar of shame...

Auldspinster · 27/06/2017 13:57

I liked the 'joined by cock and cunny' turn of phrase for dtd!

Clawdy · 27/06/2017 22:07

Yes, that was funny! Very grim episode though. Matilda annoyed me,betraying her dad like that. I don't believe she would change like that.

RaeSkywalker · 28/06/2017 12:59

I'm finding this series a bit too 'much'! The almost rape scene was very upsetting.

LouiseBrooks · 28/06/2017 14:23

Rae I've already watched the whole series and still found that scene awful but it's the motivation for Thatcher's subsequent actions and so has to be shocking. We already know how vile Shine is - the way he acted towards Mimi for example - but it has to be something big for Thatcher to do what he does at the end of the episode.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 29/06/2017 13:31

Why did the live-in nanny smash the odd-job man's head in with a poker ?

ToEarlyForDecorations · 29/06/2017 13:32

Oh, and does this mean that Matilda didn't drown as a child ? Who raised her ? Why was she to be kept away from her Dad ?

VanillaSugar · 29/06/2017 13:35

The Matilda thing was resolved in the last two series so Google the storyline. But Matilda annoys me SO much.

MaroonPencil · 29/06/2017 13:41

ToEarly I think you've missed a few series! Matilda was kept prisoner in the cellar where Reid imprisoned/ killed Long Susan's father. She was taught to fear her father if I remember correctly. Long Susan told Reid the guy who kept Matilda prisoner had done vile things to her - I really can't recall why- but in fact he had been quite kind, again if I remember correctly. Due to the false info Reid killed the guy who locked Matilda away.

Do correct me if I'm wrong!

You'd actually think Matilda would be more deranged that she is after all that.
