Rubbish Ollie, so no islands are part of any continent? I somehow doubt Nicola was arguing that although we are part of the continent of Europe we are not geographically joined to the landmass of most other European countries.

Ollie's definition also makes Europe, Asia and Africa one continent. And North and South America one continent.

Oh I didn't think the post would go this way. I know we are part of the European continent. Really as you can see in my second comment it was more not knowing what a "continent" was in the end that baffled.

Continent is used in different ways.

• a geopolitical region:in which case the UK is part of the continent of Europe
• a continuous landmass: in which case "the continent" is used as a term to talk about mainland Europe.

However, if we are using the first sense, of course we have to say we are part of Europe. We can't randomly decide we're part of Africa, can we? [grin ]
