The new Anne of Green Gables series

Anyone watching it? It's just started on Netflix. It'll be hard to live up to the 90s series though, as Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst were so perfect. But I suppose the Anne in this series is more true to the book in terms of looks and age. Megan F was possibly a tad too pretty and played 11yo Anne when she was 17 or 18.

The first one was good, lead actor is compelling and I really felt for the character. Pretty dark though. A lot of stuff was in the books but between the lines, this seems to bring it out.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 23/05/2017 19:53

Bit gutted that I went to watch an episode today and realised I had finished the series Grin Think I fell asleep for the last 10 mins but didn't feel like the last episode!

bruffian · 24/05/2017 07:04

Please tell me what happens with Matthew in episode 7. I am watching it with the girls and we are enjoying it but if they've made him do something awful I can't bear it. PM me!!

SleightOfHand · 25/05/2017 14:22

I've not seen this new series, I haven't got Netflix. Has anyone seen the Anne of Green Gables continuing story film? Some of the reviews on Amazon are bad. I know sometimes trailers can be deceiving but it does look good.

A1Sharon · 25/05/2017 19:16

Do not watch it Sleight! Honestly it is horrendous.
I mean it is a shite film as well as having all the beloved characters in it. It ruined it for me.
Really dreadful.

SleightOfHand · 25/05/2017 21:20

Oh, what a shame, I think it was the same people that made the others too. Sad

squoosh · 27/05/2017 20:19

Sleight avoid it at all costs. It's Anne in name alone, the plot is some bonkers made up shit totally unrelated to the books. I've tried to erase it from my mind.

SleightOfHand · 27/05/2017 21:04

See, I've never read the books. If you judged the film as stand alone would it be ok then? Seems like a good bit of romance Blush

My 15 year old dd who had never read the book LOVED it

Imgettingdesparatehere · 27/05/2017 23:41

It isn't a faithful adaptation but I think it captures the spirit of the books well. Especially the relationships that Anne builds with Matthew &Marilla. I thought Geraldine James in particular was brilliant in the role. I also have total house envy over Green Gables.

squoosh · 27/05/2017 23:54

Sleight in that case you may well enjoy it then. But it doesn't have any of the magic if the earlier instalments. The thing I found really distracting was how old Anne and Gilbert looked. Not too surprising considering it was made 20 years or so later, but yet we're supposed to believe they're in their early twenties. Just didn't work for me at all.

SleightOfHand · 28/05/2017 06:51

Yes, I noticed the ages/time didn't match up. The actors have such good chemistry. I was reading about the actor that played Gilbert, poor man died in RL so young.
I was also watching clips from the black and white film from 1934, another version. In fact they've got the whole film on Youtube.

bruffian · 28/05/2017 07:22

Sorry - my 15 year old who has never read the book LOVED Anne with an E! Not the film.

The supporting cast in Anne with an E is amazing.

GreenGinger2 · 01/06/2017 08:21

Dd 12 and I absolutely loved this. Thought it was superb. Have pretty much binge watched it this half term. Made dd dust off this beauty and devour it in one sitting- result.Smile

I really want to watch it but am afraid (for want of a better expression) that it simply will not match the Megan Fellows miniseries. I adored that version, especially Matthew - the scene where he dies in the field is heartbreaking.
Since watching it many years ago, it has become an ambition of mine to visit PEI, it looks stunning.

yetanotherdeskmove · 06/06/2017 18:04

I've just been watching this and got up to episode 7, but Netflix isn't offering another episode. That's can't be the end surely?

EnidButton · 07/06/2017 04:11

I haven't read the book or watched the original series and didn't know what happens next. But I do now I've read this thread.

Serves me right I suppose. Can't have spoilers on a 109 year old story. Blush

Liiinoo · 09/06/2017 13:38

I love the books. I loved the BBC Kim Braden series and the Megan Fellowes one too. Much to my surprise I also loved this reworking of the story. It was very dark and very different. Some of it was too far from the original story for my taste but the performances (especially MaryBeth McNulty and Geraldine James) were excellent and it has lingered in my mind since I finished it.

Also, it was so beautifully filmed - it would be worth watching without sound just for the beautiful landscapes. And the credits were a work of art.

I hope they make a new series soon, especially if it has a few more elements of the original books.
