Starts tonight I think?
Am quite looking forward to it.
Long time since I read it so shouldn't be constantly comparing it.

I will now, thanks to you! Do you know what channel it's on?

TheHiphopopotamus · 01/05/2017 11:31

Yes, I will!

I've read the book which I wasn't all that impressed with, tbh. I much prefer Neil Gaiman's short stories and AG was a bit too rambling and all over the place imo.

However, it's got good reviews so far and these big tv productions have turned some absolute shite books into tv gold (Outlander, I'm looking at you). Also looking forward to seeing how Ricky Whittle does.

GreenHairDontCare · 01/05/2017 11:33

Yes yes yes! It's my favourite book, I read it twice a year and have done since it first came out.

I have been looking forward to this for months.

peukpokicuzo · 01/05/2017 11:36

I loved the book. Slightly worried that the TV series won't have the right spark. It's so difficult to adapt a brilliant book for screen because if the TV is exactly faithful to the book then it's just a bit boring (eg Time Traveller's Wife) and you might as well read the book again, whereas if it isn't faithful it seems wrong, so you can't win. I think TV adaptions of interesting but flawed books are better as they can explore the concepts in a new way and diverge from the books without ruining the story (eg game of thones).

GreenHairDontCare · 01/05/2017 11:37

I think it's on now, can't open Amazon on my phone for some reason. But it says it's available.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 01/05/2017 11:38

Me! As long as they don't fuck it up a'la Lucifer, I'll be happy. I've heard rumours of an Anansi Boys spin off too.

Matchstickbox · 01/05/2017 11:38

Yes yes yes. It's one of my fav book. I can't wait. They best not screw it up.

mamapants · 01/05/2017 13:59

It's on amazon ruffian
Agree its a bit rambling hipho am hoping that gives more scope for good TV though. Like Philip K dick books always make good movies/tv

OP posts:
mamapants · 01/05/2017 14:08

Ricky Whittle was good in 100.
I just Google and apparently he had 16 auditions for AG.
I haven't read Anansi boys, is it worth a read?

RusholmeRuffian · 01/05/2017 17:00

Boo. I don't have Amazon but thanks for the heads up anyway.

mamapants · 01/05/2017 18:56

It might be available elsewhere, not sure.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 01/05/2017 18:59

Oh I can't wait. Tempted to wait a few weeks so that I can binge watch.

Anansi Boys is a great book.

crazymissdaisy · 01/05/2017 19:04

Yes! Am half way through the first episode on Amazon. It's quite stylised cinematography and very male somehow, is the book like that, I haven't read it. Love Neil Gaiman though, Ocean at the End of the Lane would make a good and terrifying film.

GreenHairDontCare · 01/05/2017 20:34

I'm waiting very impatiently for dh to finish putting ds to bed.

It is quite a male book, actually. But plenty of good female characters. I'm particularly excited to see what they do with Laura, Sam Black Crow and Bilquis. Bilquis done well will be amazing. Done wrong and it will be seedy and exploitative.

GreenHairDontCare · 01/05/2017 20:37

Ooh and the Zorayas. All of it actually.

I may squee my head off. I swear to god if it's shit I will cry myself to sleep tonight.

peukpokicuzo · 01/05/2017 21:54

I'd say it's done well.
I really liked episode 1. It's looking promising for an excellent series. Shadow is a lot less taciturn than in the books but I guess that's unavoidable given the change of medium from book to screen.

DisneylandDreams · 01/05/2017 22:22

Just finished watching E1 and I thought it was bloody brilliant. Haven't read the novel (I've spent the last 6 years doing an English Lit degree, so not much time for extra reading!) but it's been on my list of 'to-read''s for years. Loved it. I'm eager to find out if my theories are correct, but can't post them for fear of possible spoilerage.

olderthanyouthink · 01/05/2017 22:43

Oh I forgot! I'll watch it tomorrow .

Good to hear this good though

Supersmith · 01/05/2017 22:44

I didn't know ow this was a book originally, but me and DP watched it tonight and we're hooked!

GreenHairDontCare · 01/05/2017 23:19

Omg it was excellent. I'm so happy. Love the casting. Love that Audrey got a bigger part to play. I'm not a very visual person so had no firm ideas about how the characters should look, but they all worked very well for me.

And the Bilquis scene was brilliant. I had no idea how it would translate but the shifting perspective/size thing was perfect.

EachandEveryone · 02/05/2017 00:13

I wonder why Amazon productions are never made into DVDs?

peukpokicuzo · 02/05/2017 04:27

AG is not an Amazon production - in the USA it is being broadcast by a subscription TV network called Starz - amazon just have the UK broadcast rights. Starz also made and broadcast Outlander which was also on amazon in the UK and that is available on dvd, so I expect AG will be too.

I don't wonder for a moment why actual Amazon productions are never made into DVDs. If something genuinely good like The Man in the High Castle is only available if you subscribe to prime and you can only have access if you keep subscribing they will make more money than if they sell their best content for a one-off fee.

mamapants · 02/05/2017 07:40

Glad people seem impressed with it. I'm going to be waiting until later in the week when DP is home to watch it.

OP posts:
TheHiphopopotamus · 02/05/2017 11:16

Watched it and really enjoyed it.

My only gripe is I wish they'd dropped it all at once. Ricky Whittle doing a sterling job too.

StormyLovesOdd · 03/05/2017 13:29

I didn't realise this was on, its my all time fav book too, can't wait to watch it later.
