Not sure it's meant to be hilarious -- but can't help but lolling time and again when I'm not shocked and also amazed to discover that one in five women was in the sex industry?!?!? Is anyone else watching this?

not watching but want to, is it any good? what channel Is it on? and when?

Davros · 31/03/2017 00:10

I wanted to see it but it's on a weird ITV channel that's not on virgin. I need to check the catch up services

NoLotteryWinYet · 31/03/2017 21:00

it's a funny hybrid of romp and depressing vignettes of 18th century georgian women's life. Might get better, Samantha Morton's a good actress so I'll watch the second. It is on ITV catch up.

MusicToMyEars800 · 31/03/2017 22:52

I'll watch it on catch up, the adverts make it look like it's about a brothel?

NoLotteryWinYet · 31/03/2017 22:56

Oh yes definitely all about different kinds of prostitution as far as I can tell. It's got some good historical researchers behind it but it is a strange hybrid of drama and cultural history

MusicToMyEars800 · 31/03/2017 23:06

my interest was piqued when I saw the adverts for it and thought it looked good, so I will definitely give it a watch Grin

NoLotteryWinYet · 01/04/2017 09:31

Realised I've described prostitution as cultural history - hmmmm. Brain can't decide if that's culture or not!

BeyondUser24601 · 01/04/2017 11:58

Apparently it's very accurate, done from the women's perspective, and not a "happy hooker" whitewash

I haven't seen it yet, but I will be watching it

Aridane · 08/04/2017 19:52

I don't know - thought it was a bit happy hooker.

Though stunned that 1 in5 women worked in the sex industry. 1 in 5 women??? (Or 1 in 5 working women?)

BeyondUser24601 · 08/04/2017 20:03

I've seen a few episodes now. It is a bit happy hooker, you're right - more so than I was expecting from the review I saw. But there is still quite a bit of realism, so I don't think I'm disappointed.
I imagine a truly realistic portrayal wouldn't make for very good telly :(

BeyondUser24601 · 08/04/2017 20:05

I do like the music they use :)

Aridane · 16/04/2017 19:47

Yes, music is very eerie and atmospheric and sort of jittery

TreeTop7 · 14/05/2017 15:27

I found the first ep a little bland but by the end of the second I was hooked. Sublime cast. Twisting plot. It was a little bit "happy hooker" I agree, but the main settings were the homes of two successful upmarket madams where presumably the employees (although in no way "fortunate") would have been well-fed and comfortably housed, with access to doctors etc.

The portrayal of an Establishment paedophile ring would have resonated with some tweens and teens 20 years ago, never mind 200. Sadly.

PenguinOfDoom · 14/05/2017 15:30

I watched it too and thought it was great.

LazySusan11 · 28/05/2017 19:05

I've just finished watching and I loved it, I hope there's a series 2. What else can I watch now?!

Aridane · 17/06/2017 21:34

Don't know if there is a series 2
