Anyone excited to watch Decline and Fall tomorrow night? I'm really not a fan of Jack Whitehall but kind of feel convinced by good reviews -- like this one www.culturewhisper.com/r/tv/decline_and_fall_review_bbc2_jack_whitehall/8512

What do you think?

I'm very torn. I like the era (although I don't know the book), but dislike Jack W...

CoolCarrie · 30/03/2017 14:28

It has been adapted by the writer of Rev, which was great and David Suchet is in it so, fingers crossed , it will be worth a look, not much else worth watching on a Friday night anyway.

CoolCarrie · 31/03/2017 22:09

I enjoyed it very much and definitely will be watching next week, and Jack Whitehall has a nice bum!

woodhill · 31/03/2017 22:11

This was hilarious and so silly. It reminded me a bit of the Gerald Durrell series last year.

NigellasGuest · 31/03/2017 22:12

Thought it was great !
Loved how the actor who played Anthony Blanche in Brideshead was in it

LIZS · 31/03/2017 22:15

Very amusing. Not read the book but it had a sense of its time.

lucydogz · 31/03/2017 22:17

Disliked it so much that I gave up on it. The only good thing about it was the casting of Captain Grimes. It's probably OK if you haven't read and loved the book as it has a tin ear for reproducing Waugh's text and style

ILoveDolly · 31/03/2017 22:18

I liked it. JW was likable and I dont usually

frostyfingers · 31/03/2017 22:22

Loved it, I thought Douglas Hodge was brilliant and impressed with Jack Whitehall too.

Davros · 31/03/2017 22:56

Just watching on IPlayer where it's described as an "adaption" of the novel!!

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 31/03/2017 23:04

Loved it and thought it was very true to the book.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 31/03/2017 23:05

(Totally disagree with lucydogz!)

tigerdriverII · 01/04/2017 08:56

Best thing on TV for months! I'm not usually a fan of JW but he was ace in this

elephantoverthehill · 01/04/2017 09:00

It floated my boat.

Hassled · 01/04/2017 09:03

I love the book so much I was worried they'd bugger it up somehow - but they really didn't. It was great - and yes, Jack Whitehall was perfect.

Rhubarb01 · 01/04/2017 09:49

I've read the book several times and I thoroughly enjoyed this version. As others have said, I thought Jack Whitehouse was really good. I'm looking forward to the remaining episodes.

Rhubarb01 · 01/04/2017 09:51

I must have been channelling my inner Mary Whitehouse there or is it current international politics that are confusing me - it's Whitehall of course!

Megatherium · 01/04/2017 22:57

My problem with this is that much of the humour is inherently slapstick, which I've never found funny, and a bit predictable. As soon as fireworks were mentioned, for instance, we knew what was going to happen. However, within those limits I thought it was well written and acted, so I may give episode 2 a go.

Iamastonished · 01/04/2017 23:15

I think Jack Whitehall is very underrated as an actor.

I don't get the MN dislike of him either. We went to see his stand up show recently and he was so funny. Part of the set caught fire, and I thought it was part of his act until I read his tweets the following day.

yellowdaffsarein · 02/04/2017 06:57

I really enjoyed it, David Suchet is wonderful.

BikeRunSki · 02/04/2017 06:59

I enjoyed it.
I enjoy JW too though!

Another JW allergic person here and I thought he was rather good in this. Loved it. David Suchet superb as always :-)

IvankaTrudeau · 05/04/2017 20:59

I think JW's acting is better than his standup. I enjoyed it

mistressploppy · 05/04/2017 21:00

I agree, Ivanka
