Iron Fist (Netflix) - anyone watching?

We're on episode three and, while its not rocking my world yet there's enough in there that we're keeping going (in part thanks to someone who popped up in that episode who suddenly made things more interesting).

There's lots I'm less keen on though (the rubbish CG, the constant use of the plane flashbacks - three times in one episode, seriously?!) and a couple of pretty one dimensional characters.

Mostly I'm intrigued though. What kind of a tone will a Defenders show have that plays host to both Danny Rand (po faced gap year Kung Fu master with an eighties soundtrack and a weirdly bright colour palette) and gritty, real, Blaxploitation funk Luke Cage?

We are up to episode 6 or possibly 7.

We're not mad on it, but invested enough to keep watching to see how it plays out.

We've both found it a bit slow moving. I find the characterisation a bit inconsistent.

Hope everything is resolved at the end and it's not all left open for another series!

Blink1982 · 19/03/2017 23:32

I hate how long the opening credits go on for.

GeekyWombat · 21/03/2017 18:19

We're on episode five now. We literally sat last night trying to pin down why we're watching it - it's not great but we're still oddly intrigued as to how it pans out. Agree totally about the opening credits!

I'd say I'm enjoying it, but not as much as I'd hoped.

Things I like:-
Ward and Harolds relationship (intense)
Erm..................
Carrie Ann Moss
Madame Gao

Things I don't like:-
Danny's sulky face
Lack of light relief
A good deal of the script is pretty much just sound bites.
Fight scenes nowhere near as good as Daredevil.
Danny Rand is a bit like a nice but dim Oliver Queen.

GeekyWombat · 22/03/2017 08:46

I have to say Carrie Ann Moss popping up was the thing that stopped us from giving up to going 'ok this is kind of interesting'. It's a bad sign when her and Rosario Dawson are my favourite people, although I also like Colleen.

I definitely find it weird the fight scenes are so bad compared to Daredevil (especially when, yannow, it's supposed to be a Kung Fu show). A lot of the po faced spiritual stuff is actually incredibly awkward. He sounds like the worst kind of gap year kid who 'found himself' in the Himalayas!

I'm on episode six or seven now I think and I'm finding Ward more fun as they're making him less of a cardboard cutout corporate villain.

Totally agree with the Oliver Queen comparison!

We're watching too. It is a bit slow. And I keep thinking Danny Rand looks like Brian McFadden & Joy looks like Mel C.

squiz81 · 22/03/2017 21:13

We're just starting episode 11 so the end is in sight! It's feeling like a drag but I also want to know what happens...so thats a mark in its favour!

The inconsistencies in characters haven't got any better. The hand just seems like a load of ordinary people - Which isn't the impression I got from daredevil.

Danny has just become too "earthly" too quickly for someone that spent their formative years in another dimension!

Fizzball · 22/03/2017 21:29

I'm up to episode 7 and only watching because DH is enjoying it. It's so dull. The only character I kind of like is Colleen. Danny Rand is the worst.

EllaHen · 22/03/2017 21:37

I'm another who is oddly drawn to the Iron Fist.

I like Ward the best. I feel I can relate to him. Grin

Yes, Danny is like a naïve baby. Would it be giving the show too much credit to suppose that that was the intention?

I also like Colleen. I'll watch to the end of the series.

MsJolly · 22/03/2017 21:41

Have finished it-not that enamoured TBH tho I did like some of the cross over bits like madam gao

CumbrianExile · 23/03/2017 11:35

I have finished it. I quite liked it, but do agree with the Oliver Queen comparison.

Looking forward to the defenders series next.

EdmundSlackbladder · 23/03/2017 22:26

BRIAN MCFADDEN!! That's it!! Been bothering me since the beginning. And yes, yes to the gap year kid.
I've finished the series now and the best thing was still Ward and Harold. Found Joy a really dull character.
It feels like the series was kind of thrown together in order to set up The Defenders which is a bit of a shame.

likewhatevs · 24/03/2017 17:00

I've also started watching. No idea what episode I'm on. Harold cut off his finger recently though..
I find it oddly super-slow and compelling at the same time. I agree - Rosario Dawson always a reason to watch. The other females too, although the actress who plays Joy - isn't she supposed to be in her early twenties? She looks late 30s to me (sorry that actress if you aren't)
Ward is great. A slimeball, but understandably damaged by his dad. Danny is just annoying. If I was that doctor, I'd have kept him institutionalised as well. I mean really. He might have been in a different dimension for 15 years, but having been given the reception that he was, would he really think 'oh yes, good idea, I'll tell that doctor that's where I've been - then he'll let me outta here'.
The action is slow. The iron fist is, well, a bit laughable actually. For someone who supposedly 'earned' his powers, he seems remarkably unsure about the whole thing.
Still. Will keep watching.

Bea · 30/03/2017 00:38

Finished it... I rather enjoyed it!... I feel bad that they've got such rotten reviews!... It wasnt as bad as some reviewers are making it out to be!... I think it's got a really hard act to follow daredevil (I absolutely adore!)... Jessica Jones and Luke Cage...
Felt the character of Danny Rand was rather annoying... But felt like he was supposed to be as he's basically a petulant teenager trying to find his place in the world... He hasn't managed to grow up!... Loved Colleen Wing and of course... Clare Temple is the bees knees!
Really really looking forward to the defenders now!

OvO · 06/04/2017 00:11

I've just finished watching this. I enjoyed it. I do think it could have been so much better with only small changes.

I did like that I started out all 'he's obviously a baddie, and she's a goody...' and I ended up changing my mind about everyone!

I hope there's a second series - think it would be even better!

Jessica Jones is currently filming series two.

The Defenders is coming to Netflix in August.

Bea · 07/04/2017 18:55

Love them all... But Daredevil is the ultimate!

DorotheaHomeAlone · 07/04/2017 19:00

Definitely the weakest of the marvel Ines on Netflix. Jessica jones is head and shoulders above the rest. Then Luke cage, then quite a way behind is daredevil with this crap trailing in the distance.

OvO · 07/04/2017 19:20

I haven't watched Jessica Jones or Luke Cage, will give them a try since everyone in this thread seems to have liked them.

I did start watching Daredevil but it didn't grab me.
