A thought just struck me about the series Northern Exposure

I don't know whether my memory is faulty, but it just occurred to me that there were no children in it. Not just that the main characters didn't have children, but I don't remember there being any children at all, not even in background, non-speaking parts or walking around in the town.

Am I mis-remembering, it is over 20 years ago after all? If not, why didn't it strike me as odd at the time?

I loved northern exposure.
I can't remember much about it other than Ed was played by the son of Billy Dragon and Ed, or the actor that played him, had to dye his bright blonde hair black to play the part.

As for kids... I don't know.. Grin

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 21/02/2017 09:30

I think he's been working out. He looks like a different person in Numb3rs. I've got NE on video tape somewhere, yes video tapeGrin

TheLivingAsheth · 21/02/2017 09:40

Blimey, just looked up Rob Morrow as have not seen Numb3rs - he doesn't look 54!

TimTamTerrier · 21/02/2017 12:38

I think Rob Morrow never really looked young, and that type of man often grows into his looks better than the ones who are very boyish. I didn't think he was at all fanciable in NE, although that was as much because of the whiney, neurotic character as his looks, but he's definitely looking good now.

" Ed, or the actor that played him, had to dye his bright blonde hair black to play the part. "

Can't imagine him with blonde hair at all!

Why do I think Shelley's daughter may have been called Miranda , Randy? Something about that is ringing a bell.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 21/02/2017 22:48

I loved this too. No there weren't many kids in it. I have some of the series on DVD too; think I'll watch tomorrow. If i spot any kids I'll shout :)

Girlwhowearsglasses · 21/02/2017 22:56

Oooh can someone watch and come back to report how it has fared? I'd hate to watch and hate it as I watched it religiously. I seem to remember it filled the same niche as Twin Peaks on Channel Four but not as dark. I loved it. I tried to watch Twin Peaks again and found it very difficult as I felt 16 again (age I was when I watched it) and not in a good way

officerhinrika · 22/02/2017 00:28

Shelley had a phantom pregnancy in one of the early episodes. I think there were some kids in crowd scenes but none of the main characters had any. I may have been rewatching some of the dvds recently😀.

Loved that show. DH and I would watch it every week. We loved the fact that Bar was called The Brick.

MarilynWhirlwindRocks · 22/02/2017 14:03

Ahem... Grin

This is interesting on the subject

diddl · 22/02/2017 14:35

The thing with Shelly is a bit weird, isn't it?

She's 18 & living with in his 60s Holling, having been brought there at 16 by the also in his 60s(?) Maurice.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 22/02/2017 16:26

Shelly was quite irritating Grin

headake · 22/02/2017 16:42

Shelly was 18 when she fished up with Maurice, not 16.

There was definitely a flash-forward episode where Shelly & Miranda (now a teenager) are interacting. Or I've got TV-land dementia. I'm sure it was teenage Miranda (14yo?) giving Shelly grief, though.

MaroonPencil · 22/02/2017 16:55

Yeah, I remember that too. Shelly was showing her how to wash blood out of her knickers, she said use cold water not hot - I have always remembered that as a tip, don't know if it is true!

headake · 22/02/2017 17:40

it's what I was taught to do (re blood on knix). The episode was called "Hello I love you" but I can't find a full synopsis.

diddl · 22/02/2017 19:19

How long was she in Cicely before she didn't marry Holling (she thinks that she's pregnant) as I'm sure that she was only supposed to be 18 then?

TimeforANewTwatName · 22/02/2017 19:26

Wow northern exposure? That's was a long time ago.....

But I'm sure I remember children in it. One went to visit the guy who lived in a protective dome and grew his own fruit and veg, because he had allergies, he rubbed a shop bought tomato on his arm to show the child the reactions he has.

MaureenMLove · 22/02/2017 19:36

The only thing I remember is the one where a piano was flung from a huge catapult! Loved that series!

Rednailsandnaeknickers · 22/02/2017 19:44

Oh yes I absolutely loved NE too and watched it religiously. It was great.

Totally fancied the pants off the gorgeous Mr Corbett so when he turned up in SATC and all my friends were going who is THAT hottie? I was all smug, doing the "oh yeah, I KNOW him already" thing Grin

You're right tho OP very few children that I can recall. Never occurred to me at the time!

GrainOfSalt · 22/02/2017 20:00

Shelley and Holling have Randi (Miranda Bliss) and Adam and Eve have a baby boy called Aldridge (I know far too much AND MISS THIS SHOW Sad )

tribpot · 22/02/2017 21:17

I remember a flash forward episode as well. Here's a fairly long synopsis (does not cover the all important question of cold water) and it links to a podcast discussion.

kwick · 27/02/2017 20:12

... umm... I have the box set on DVD but have only watched a couple of the 28 discs... must get back into it - I LOVE John Corbett

ShouldHaveListenedInBiology · 27/02/2017 22:20

Oh how I loved this show. I have most of them on DVD but DH found it a bit too weird for his taste, I have the soundtrack too and the music is just brilliant. Had never occurred to me about the lack of children!

PootlewasthebestFlump · 28/02/2017 17:14

Oh my god just the names take me back 20 years! I was a student and then working so I only caught it when I could/wasn't out raving etc but loved it. No.one eke seems to have heard of it.

It was odd in a whimsical way.

I can't hear the thought that 20 years has slipped by though! How??!!
