I can't be the only one watching, surely?

A birth and a death, but the whole episode felt weirdly emotionless...

No new mother would instinctively throw herself into the path of a bullet. What a cheesy way to kill her. It would have been better if Mary had riled the old lady up enough for her to be the target.

And Martin Freeman's 'angry crying' was comically awful. I couldn't be sad about Mary because I was too busy wondering where the hell that weird noise was coming from Grin I think that's an example of a star getting so famous that no-one has the guts to tell them something doesn't work. He sounded like a malfunctioning motorbike...

braceybracegirl · 01/01/2017 22:10

He sounded like he was having a shit.

Riversleep · 01/01/2017 22:11

I enjoyed it later on in the episode. The beginning was a bit of a mishmash ' oh I'm so clever' vibe. I'm glad pp mentioned Mary was in the books! I thought she was, and said to my mil that she dies in the books and she looked at me like I was an idiot. She said Mary wasn't in the books!

iklboo · 01/01/2017 22:12

DH said it sounded like Martin Freeman was 'thrutching a poo'

DeepAndCrispAndEvenTheWind · 01/01/2017 22:12

Here's the earlier thread op

Riversleep · 01/01/2017 22:13

Yes I can't understand how Martin Freeman has become so successful. He really is charisma free. Although that must have been hellish to film bearing in mind they were splitting up at the time, so maybe he's an amazing actor Grin

whyhastherumgone · 01/01/2017 22:16

I was over on the other thread - don't get why they brought in a random fling for John? Seemed really out of character.
Disappointed with the episode, seems like it's lost it's way

Catiemack · 01/01/2017 22:16

Shite.

I agree...Mary should never have been brought in, it ruined the dynamic completely. And I don't think AA is a very good actress.

Next weeks looks better.

Hunnybadger1 · 01/01/2017 22:17

Thanks Autumnchill - don't recognise his films but know I've seen him somewhere before ...

Hunnybadger1 · 01/01/2017 23:02

And we've worked it out, Edward Judge is a barman in a local pub 😂😂😂 Our own Sherlock mystery solved!

dillite · 01/01/2017 23:29

Thank you Deep, I didn't see that one.

Well, that was a disappointing episode topped by a constipated Watson squeezing out a poo. Fibre Watson. Fibre.

I would like it to go back to mini crime solving episodes as well. I find that most shows that start out as single episodes and then move onto drawn out dramas and complicated storylines, lose their appeal.

OP posts:
LouiseBrooks · 02/01/2017 01:39

Am so glad it wasn't just me who thought he sounded constipated!

I quite like Sherlock although I do find it overrated, but this was pants. I thought The Abominable Bride was much better than this.

I'm glad about Mary, I never could stand her.

DragonitesRule · 02/01/2017 09:26

That was rubbish. Shan't be watching the rest.

Catiemack · 05/01/2017 09:44

Hold on a minute, Sherlock fans...before you abandon the rest of the series....

I won't say what but there is an EXTREMELY interesting and compelling theory doing the rounds that this episode was deliberately shit. Or at least, what we thought was happening actually wasn't - and that all the production errors, terrible cliched (sp?) writing (Mary faster than a speeding bullet etc) were done for effect.

The fling and "Sherlock, you bastard" are probably far more important than we realise.

I hope this is the case. Moffat and Gattiss are far, far too good at what they do to have served up that steaming pile of horsecrap, surely?

Catiemack · 05/01/2017 09:46

Should add that the theory is not mind palace....it's more interesting than that.

CalmItKermitt · 05/01/2017 09:48

Ooh Catie pm me please?!

Catiemack · 05/01/2017 10:20

Can I PM from the app? I can't see how.

Go to Reddit/Sherlock and about 12 posts down there's a thread about the theory. I can't give the title because it's revealing.

YorkiesGlasses · 05/01/2017 13:14

there is an EXTREMELY interesting and compelling theory doing the rounds that this episode was deliberately shit

What irritates me about that theory is that we get three episodes every two years! It's not like they have 22 episodes to play around and experiment with. I appreciate that if it was done deliberately we could go back and rewatch to see what we missed, but it's still basically a wasted episode.

TheHiphopopotamus · 05/01/2017 13:45

Exactly yorkie.

Also, if that theory is true, I hope Mary is still dead and they don't bring her back. She's a terrible character played by a terrible actress.

NotCitrus · 05/01/2017 14:21

I liked the first half hour and then it was all Mary/Ajay running around implausibly and now it's (yet again) are they dead or not? Though given Watson was lying on Mary not giving any first aid or anything, as a doctor he ought to know whether she's dead or not (unless both Watsons, Mycroft and Sherlock are all together trying to fool Norbury, in which case someone would have had to nobble her gun earlier as well...)

Given the obvious clues like Ammo/Love, Norbury (Sherlock's failure), etc, I'd love to believe it was deliberately crap, and three years ago I would have, but given Moffat/Gatiss producing Doctor Who and Sherlock series which have become way too overblown and preposterous, I sadly doubt it.

Catiemack · 05/01/2017 14:23

Agree re: Mary. Can't abide her.

I don't know whether I agree with you or not, Yorkie. I sort of do but I can also see the value in what they've done (if they have). Sherlock is all about misdirection...and this would be the ultimate in that. I do remember someone or other saying that we should see the episodes as one continuous story rather than three.

I'll hold off on my judgement. If that theory is basically right, they've gone to a lot of trouble to fool us.

Soooo...we'll see, I guess. At least it's made me want to watch the next one, I wouldn't have bothered otherwise.

CalmItKermitt · 05/01/2017 14:23

I don't believe for a second that Mary didn't know about Johns dalliance with bad wig Scottish woman.

CalmItKermitt · 05/01/2017 14:24

I really like AA as an actress! What's wrong with her??

Catiemack · 05/01/2017 14:24

Agree. Citrus. If it turns out it was crap just because it was crap I'll never take either of them seriously as writers again.

Catiemack · 05/01/2017 14:37

The clues of misdirection seem to be:

Several scenes shown twice but with different words used

Mary dying in a way that she once said wouldn't happen (jumping backwards when shot and spurting blood)

Stories introduced for no apparent reason (the fling)

The stupid Bond-esque dialogue

The baddie revealed to be someone who'd only been in the episode a few seconds

John's constipated howling (Martin Freeman is a better actor than that)

John not being in the room when Mary was shot, but entering the building with Sherlock

The jpeg/blog post: For those that never saw it, John's blog is/was available online during the last series. It had details of cases we saw but also references to cases that we didn't. One of the latter was The Six Thatchers. This has not been taken off the blog. The blog now says that John Watson doesn't update it any more. This blog was a big part of the Sherlock universe accessed by fans and with clues on it. Highly unlikely they'd just abandon it. So it's quite possible that this is actually a clue in itself and the jpeg shot was not a mistake.

Dunno. Like I said...we'll see.
