Jean Alexander who played Hilda Ogden has passed away at the age of 90. One of coronation streets best characters portrayed by a great actress. RIP chuck.

'Woman, Stanley. Woman'.

RIP Jean Alexander.

That is sad, she was brilliant as Hilda, when Corrie was funny, sad and unmissable. Class act with Stan,Eddie, Mrs Walker, her curlers ,three ducks and her muriel! Thank you for the laughs, R I P.

R.I.P. To use an Irish expression ;
ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann (there shall not be her like again).

YouHadMeAtCake · 15/10/2016 13:45

I loved her as Hilda in CS and in Last of The Summer Wine as Auntie Wainwright . Hilda was a legend in curlers. The scene in CS where Stan had died and she was holding his glasses still makes me blub. Goodnight Mrs Alexander.

Aww, I was just talking about her yesterday saying how good Corrie was with her, Annie Walker Elsie Tanner etc. Brilliant character actress . Rest In Peace Jean/Hilda

She and the likes of Vera, Bet, Betty, Raquel and many more were such credible characters. I was just trying to think of some of the names of the current characters, (and I watched up to very recently), and I genuinely can't.

I can clearly picture Hilda crying after Stan's death, her departure from the Street, when she was terribly offended that Percy suggested she would be glad to leave her beloved 'murial' Smile... She was one of the best.

ImperialBlether · 15/10/2016 15:16

She was a really great character. I was surprised to find she was alive so long after leaving Corrie - I hadn't heard anything about her in years.

EdithWeston · 15/10/2016 15:20

She went on to be in The Last Of The Summer Wine for ages.

But it's Hilda that is the towering character.

I've been thinking today of her brilliant scene when she returned home after Stan's death, just sat down and looked at his glasses.

ChampagneCommunist · 15/10/2016 15:25

And she was great in the film Scandal, she played Christine Keeler's mother

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 15/10/2016 15:30

I no longer watch Corrie, but Hilda and Stan were brilliant characters played by amazing actors, some very fond memories. RIP Jean.

Rrross1ges · 15/10/2016 16:35

We'll never forget her "muriel"

gillybeanz · 15/10/2016 16:43

Not only was she brilliant as Hilda but to those who don't know she was a marvellous actress, very capable of playing lots of different roles. Treading the boards from an early age in theatres across N Wales, Cheshire and Lancs.
She wouldn't return to play Hilda for one offs because she knew Hilda would have moved on and become a bit posh. She thought that the public wouldn't like a new Hilda and I think she was right.
A true Northern Soul and a lovely wit according to her niece, reporting in Man Eve News.

RIP Jean Alexander. A true professional who gave her heart and soul to her career.

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2016 16:55

I watched Corrie back then - my mum read her autobiography and I remember her saying to me ' she;s nothing like hilda' ( as a little kid I thought she was like that!) lol. RIP to a true legend. she sounded very well liked and that must be hard in such a cut throat environment. sad news.
