rhu googled 5s and 20s and got this:

When you're on a patrol and stop, you make two passes with your eyes. One pass is for immediate harm to you - stuff within 5 feet of you, like IEDs and mines. The second pass is 25 feet from him, and involves stuff like fortifications, people, and so on. Every time you stop, you make these passes continuously. So it basically means, "Pay attention."

CJ said "new chap" which made me think the relationship was relatively new but long enough for them to be engaged, ie, not a few weeks sort of thing. A few months perhaps?
