Did anyone else watch it? Reminded me a bit of 'Devil wears Prada'. I cannot believe it but I cried (!!) when she had to pose with those models and they were laughing at her. At last something to watch on a Friday night. As an added bonus the actress from Extras too has a big part in it.

bookends · 05/01/2007 23:38

I loved it

MKG · 06/01/2007 00:18

This series is so good and funny. I'm in the US and am totally refreshed at how it balances drama, comedy with a hint of campiness.

sockmonkey · 06/01/2007 09:05

I really enjoyed it too. She isn't that ugly either.
I kinda feel bad for the actress turning up for the audition "We want someone ugly - yes you will do"

Also was that Salma Hayak (sp?) on the spanish TV show in the background?

bandstand · 06/01/2007 10:23

couldnt really concentrate on it as i was on this!

belgo · 06/01/2007 10:24

WHat channel is it on? I'd like to watch it.

bandstand · 06/01/2007 10:26

channel 4. i said to my dh i dont really like the idea as i know how she feels... he just laughed at me

belgo · 06/01/2007 10:28

that's a shame,we don't get channel 4 here. But it will probably appear on Belgium TV in a year or so.

lemonaid · 06/01/2007 10:42

It was almost certainly Salma Hayek as she's the producer of Ugly Betty (having bought up the idea from an original Mexican show).

princessmel · 06/01/2007 10:48

I really liked it. I too thought it was sad in parts.
She's not really ugly atall as I bet they'll do a ugly duckling to swan thing at the end.
Yes It was Salma Heyek on the tv show in background. I didn't know she was the producer.

marthaepsilonmoo · 06/01/2007 10:52

I really enjoyed it -she isn't ugly though

It would have been interesting to see them pick someone genuinely unattractive for the role - I suspect the producers thought viewers wouldn't accept someone who was really "ugly". I remember when Will and Grace started, people speculating about whether it would have been such a success if the lead actor had really been gay, like the character he was portraying. I'm not sure I buy into the argument - it's acting after all (you can play someone who is HIV positive, for example, without having to be so yourself...) but I do anticipate there being a "Why, Ms Suarez...you're beautiful" [take off spectacles and let hair down] moment at some point in the future.

lemonaid · 06/01/2007 11:21

Supposedly John Barrowman was turned down for the lead in Will & Grace for being "not gay enough", even though he is and whats-his-face isn't.

lemonaid · 06/01/2007 11:28

She is kind of "ugly" in Hollywood terms, though -- in that she's a reasonably attractive ordinary person of standard healthy build. They's never be able to make her look like the clotheshorses at the magazine so I don't think there'll be anything as obvious as a simple ugly duckling to swan transformation.

anorak · 06/01/2007 11:44

I quite liked it but it made me feel a bit sad. I thought if anybody really watched it they'd say to themself, if that girl's supposed to be so ugly, what hope is there for me?

anorak · 06/01/2007 11:44

I meant to say, anybody really ugly

DizzyBint · 06/01/2007 11:47

ooooh, next episode is on e4 on wednesday 9pm. just seen advert.

bookends · 07/01/2007 23:01

Does anyone else think that the lead is a shorter version of Dennis Quaid? I also like his smile and is fit according to my tweenie dd! Really enjoying my Wednesday (DH) and Friday nights' tv. atm.

southeastastra · 08/01/2007 11:47
