House M.D addicts - do you think Hugh Laurie's American accent carries?

Just that. I've been re-watching the series again and my America friend thinks that his accent isn't typical of an actual American accent. So I put it to you, what do reckon?

Where's your friend from? My DCs would be hard pressed to judge a 'typical' Bristol accent, for example, or anything Scottish.

I think he sounds ok tbh I'm no accent expert but he's amazing in it and rather sexy

I once said how awful it was to an American friend and she said all her friends thought he was from the US. And she lives very close to where House is set.

I think he does a decent job of it.

It's kind of non-specific location US accent but sounds authentic to me.

Though in an episode I caught the other day he had to say "ribbit" like a frog and it couldn't have been more posh English if he'd tried. It was like Prince George wandered on set for a few seconds.

It's all in the eyes. In Blackadder he looks all vacant and lost, in House he looks all grumpy and clever and hot. It's an amazing bit of acting.

He is much more wantonly sexy as an American. Leaves me a bit cold as a Brit, but is counter balanced by him being a baddy who loves his son, so fanciable again......

It was on when I was living in America and my friends were surprised to find out he was British.

I'm American, and have a pretty good ear for accents if I do say so myself. I think he is pretty good (I missed ribbit.) He does sometimes over-enunciate "r's", a common fault of British actors doing American accents, but some Americans do that as well so it doesn't really ring false. Also he has cadences down well.

I fancied him in Jeeves and Wooster, and A Little Bit of Fry and Laurie. He was my first actual celebrity crush actually. My American friend mentioned above refused to believe it was the same person.

Yes, the casting director didn't want to see any more British actors for the part and didn't realise Hugh Laurie was British when he heard him read for the part.

I think he is one of the best actors ever and certainly the most versatile. Did you see him in Stuart Little? Adorable! Then watch him in House and you can't believe his versatility.
