The Good Wife - dissappointing

Thought I'd watch it after I'd seen a few people rave about it on here (also it's got good Netflix ratings). Watched a few episodes last night and genuinely don't get the appeal. I thought it dull and I just did not care about any of the characters. Anyone with me on that?

Bit annoyed as I only watch TV at weekends and school hols so wasted an evening. I've watched and really enjoyed:

Luther
Top Boy
Orange is the New Black
Making a Murderer

Maybe Good Wife wasn't edgy enough for me? Any recommendations please from like minded people?

Sorry you didn't like TGW.

As you can see from our current thread, we
are all Long time viewers. Seven years of TGW in the UK.
We love the characters, the plots, the courtroom dramas and the Politics. In addition to discussing Alicia's hair, Diane's outfits, Eli's suits, hunky and not so hunky men, Kalindas lesbian relationships.

Sounds as if you prefer faster storylines and more action ?
There is a new drama starting on Sunday BBC1 9 pm The Night Manager. Stars Tom Hiddlestone and Hugh Laurie.

The Good Wife isn't massively edgy, that's true.

All I can say from my experience is that I wasn't all that keen at the start –I also thought it was a bit dull and a bit soapy.

My DP loved it and made me keep watching, and slowly but surely I got sucked in to it. I love it now and am distraught that the current series might be the last.

It's about the characters and their development, the relationships between them (which change and change again rapidly and constantly) and the long story arcs, just as much as it's about the short legal-case stories.

I'd say stick with it a bit longer, personally.

My opinion was exactly the same as yours at the beginning, but I needed something "easy" to watch on maternity leave the hell of never ending sleep deprivation and I love it now. So sad this is the last series!

cakedup · 17/02/2016 10:10

I did wonder if it was a 'grower'. Might give it another chance now although I started watching House of Cards last night which seemed a lot more promising. To be fair, it wouldn't be the first time I've started a series thinking 'meh' and ending up hooked.

Didn't know there was a dedicated thread Timetogetup0630 - might have a little peek!

Come on over, OP, but be warned, it's quite spoilery if you've just started as we're discussing the current series, which is 7!

Angeladelight · 17/02/2016 10:40

Based on what you like house of cards might be more up your ally. I only watch good wife if I'm feeling a bit tired and lazy because it is something I don't really have to concentrate on. It does get better though imo!

Micah · 17/02/2016 10:43

Orphan black? A lot "edgier" :)

scarlets · 17/02/2016 17:14

I wasn't enamoured with TGW at first. It took me several eps to get hooked. It gathers pace halfway through S1 I think.

Baconyum · 17/02/2016 23:46

If you want legal drama that's edgier - damages! Just started watching myself the other weekend and watch 2 seasons! I usually need to do something else while watching TV as I have anxiety and need a lot of distraction - couldn't with this too much happening.

But I do love TGW and it is long story arcs so there is a pay off I LOVE Eli gold just the whole Machiavellian thing so interesting.

Veterinari · 18/02/2016 20:46

Where are you finding Damages?? I watched season 1 on Netflix and now want more!

Baconyum · 18/02/2016 21:16

5 seasons on UK Netflix. You not in UK?

BitOfFun · 18/02/2016 22:32

I'm watching tonight's episode, and I am HORRIFIED at the conspicuous injustice of the bail bonds court. It's absolutely inhuman.

cakedup · 18/02/2016 23:23

Started watching House of Cards...I love Kevin Spacey, love the characters, love the way Spacey talks to the camera, great set/music etc....only thing is I don't quite understand all of it! However, I remember feeling like that with West Wing and it ended up being one of my all time faves. At least TGW is easy to follow.

Thanks for the recommendations, will definitely have a look at Damages and Orphan Black.

Try the blacklist, it's brilliant.

scarlets · 19/02/2016 14:24

Ah yes, the cunning Eli Gold. He's brill. I like Louis Canning too. And Lemond Bishop. I think they appear in S2 or S3.

Baconyum · 20/02/2016 01:54

Yes love Louis canning! Lemond bishop is...an interesting character, but even more interesting in that direction is Charles Lester his criminal lawyer.

scarlets · 20/02/2016 09:44

Oooooih yes - Charles Lester. Fantastic character.

I enjoy the blonde lawyer, Patti, also. She has some wonderful lines and delivers them perfectly.

Baconyum · 21/02/2016 00:42

You know patti is played by meryl streeps daughter?

Baconyum · 21/02/2016 00:45

Oops no that's Martha plimpton , mamie plays Nancy - the 'country naïf' who isn't really

BitOfFun · 21/02/2016 02:50

No way?! Wow.

scarlets · 21/02/2016 08:50

Wow! Actually, there is a resemblance.

Nancy's a good character as well. A dangerous opponent. In fact, I like pretty much all of the recurring characters.

The only character [spoiler alert] I really disliked was Kalinda's husband. I forwarded through the scenes of their sado-masochistic nonsense.

BitOfFun · 22/02/2016 13:19

Totally with you on that one.

MargotLovedTom · 22/02/2016 13:58

I want more Judge Abernathy Wink.

OnlyLovers · 22/02/2016 14:00

Oh, I hated the Kalinda and her husband interlude. I really hated his face. [irrational] and I didn't find their S&M stuff sexy at all. Were we supposed to?

I LOVE Nancy. And all the weirdo judges. And Michael J Fox.

scarlets · 22/02/2016 14:42

In fact, I found all of Kalinda's sex scenes pretty unappealing. She's quite pretty but so unsexy IMO (I know that's subjective though). Her outfits were absurd, she looked like a 1980s teen boy fantasy.

I loved her sleuthing and her relationships with Alicia and Will though. Great scenes with Bishop in S6, too.
