I know he isn't popular on MN but I'm going against the grain and thinking I actually quite like him on the been.

I really don't see the attraction, and am quite bewildered by the Beckham's popularity TBH. I do wonder about the children too, what sort of life they have in store WRT keeping the brand alive at all costs.

I enjoyed the programme, very feel-good stuff which makes a change.

I love DB. Haven't watched the programme yet though.

His mate Dave is Dave Gardner, his agent. He loves a bit of reflected limelight. He was married to Davinia Taylor and is now with Liv Tyler.

I always laugh when people speculate or even believe DB is about to be knighted.
Why would he be knighted?

SheHasAWildHeart · 31/12/2015 02:24

If you honestly believe he only does what he does for a knighthood...seems like a lot of effort for just a title when he has fame, money, looks and talent...

Report
SheHasAWildHeart · 31/12/2015 02:25

And I meant talent in football before someone tells me he isn't talented. He is successful without a knighthood. As is his wife.

SheHasAWildHeart- Do you actually understand the implications of a Knighthood?

Report
VintageDresses · 31/12/2015 09:40

There are loads of reasons DB could/should be knighted. Not least for being one of the best footballers we've ever had, let alone the charity work and the stuff he does for grass roots football., no matter the motive.Loads of far less worthy people have already got a knighthood. Not that I think he should, just that I'm surprised at the suggestion that it couldn't/shouldn't happen.

I always wonder why he's never been referred to as Dave.

Lancôme - what are the implications of knighthood?

Report
SymphonyofShadows · 31/12/2015 10:17

There aren't many implications, its purely ceremonial. VB would be Lady Beckham but not Lady Victoria for instance. He would get to wear certain pins and sashes and there is an order or precedence for state banquets etc. That's about it.

Exactly as above, it's just a chance to wear a few fancy medals.

Lol better than being rude. Answer Ginny's question or provide an eloquent counter-argument to what Symphony said. I'm going to hide this thread. Only came online for some distraction to deal with a bereavement but I don't this unnecessarily negativity from a stranger.

SymphonyofShadows · 31/12/2015 12:23

You sound like a pleb how lovely! Were you getting it confused with a peerage? They do have 'implications' but they don't just hand those out to random slebs who have done a bit of charity.

SymphonyofShadows · 31/12/2015 12:34

Actually, I suspect the reason that he hasn't had one yet is entirely due to Victoria. When I has been suggested in the past that he is knighted she has gone on record as saying something along the lines of "being Lady Victoria would be a blast". A very dim view would have been taken of that.

As I said above, she would only be entitled to use 'Lady Beckham' as the honour isn't hers but that probably wouldn't stop it happening, particularly in the US.

Why is Victoria expecting David and not herself make her a Lady?

Report
flightywoman · 31/12/2015 13:10

Oh c'mon Symphony, it's not just the US, The Princess of Wales was ALWAYS called Princess Di or Princess Diana by pretty much every paper in the UK.

And TBH I'd rather someone like Beckham got an honour based on his talent and what he has since done with it, than the tory donors and lick-arses such as Lynton Crosby.

Come to that, I'd like Victoria Beckham to get one that was high enough for her to actually be Lady Victoria. Unlikely, but it would be hilarious.

SymphonyofShadows · 31/12/2015 13:13

Because she can't be a Lady in her own right. It's only given to children of Lords etc. She could potentially be a Dame, if Babs can then anything is possible.

I have this recorded, going to watch it with my son when he gets home from staying with his grandmother later today as we were at the game at Old Trafford. He always comes across as a lovely man, and having seen him quite close up (our seats were front row by the goal) he looks incredible in the flesh. Made me feel old though because I saw him play many times when he was in his teens and early 20s and it doesn't seem possible that he's 40 now, and there was his son on the pitch at the same age as his Dad was when he was playing there. Time flies.

The Princess of Wales was Lady Diana Spencer before her marriage so she had the title in her own right. She was always Lady Di.

Yes, but she wasn't Princess Diana, she was Diana, Princess of Wales or The Princess of Wales.

And Victoria Beckham could be a Lady in her own right if she was awarded an Order of the Garter. Which is highly unlikely.

Report
SymphonyofShadows · 31/12/2015 13:54

Sorry flighty, I misread your previous post. I'd forgetten about the Order of the Garter, isn't that for chivalry? I'm a raging republican but I used to have to know all this stuff and it's stuck for some reason. The Lady one is the one that is most misused apparently.

Report
flightywoman · 01/01/2016 12:30

Oh you're so right Symphony, the Lady thing is so misused! Even Downton hasn't helped Wink
