Tsunami, the Aftermath

Bafta-winning screenwriter Abi Morgan (Sex Traffic, Murder) has a gift for writing involving, gripping dramas and this two-parter is a typically absorbing, thoroughly researched dramatisation of the devastating impact of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. Though the scale of the disaster is unimaginable, Morgan focuses on a handful of disparate characters: an amoral British journalist who's first on the scene; a holidaying British couple searching for their six-year-old daughter; a hard-pressed British government official; and a Thai survivor. In the standout cast, it's particularly good to see Tim Roth back on our screens as the reporter, and Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sophie Okonedo also shine as the holidaying young couple whose daughter is missing. The re-imagining of the deadly tidal wave is frighteningly well done, using video footage and skilful re-creation. But it's the immediate aftermath that is in many ways more powerful, as desperate families hunt for loved ones in the face of language barriers, a health service perilously close to breakdown and authorities that are simply overwhelmed.

I can't watch this for the simple reason that I can't watch depictions of parents losing children.

jenk1 · 28/11/2006 22:40

Have just watched this, both me and DH cried.

It was so so sad, but i wanted to watch it as it was one of the worst natural disasters that have happened to mankind and i wanted to see if there have been any lessons learned from how to avoid another one or anything else.

ameli · 28/11/2006 22:56

it was so sad and i feel for all those parents who lost their children, heartbreaking.

Gingerbear · 28/11/2006 22:58

I purposely didn't watch. The memories are still too raw.

lou33 · 28/11/2006 23:07

still too hard for me to watch i think

RTKangaMummy · 28/11/2006 23:17

Lou

I really didn't know whether it was the right thing to do for me to alert on here about it

I have been ummmming and ahhhing about it all day

In the end I thought I should incase some people wanted to watch - and cos they were on here involved in a discussion they missed it

I think it is rather too quick for them to make a drama out of it

I think if it was in about 5 - 10 years time then ok

I am really sorry if alerting to it this evening has upset you

no not at all kanga, dont be silly, all you did was say it was on

i agree i think it's too soon to be putting something like this on. man i still cant bring myself to read/watch anything about it and we all emerged unscathed, i can't imagine what it must be like for those who lost a loved one

RTKangaMummy · 28/11/2006 23:27

Episode written by Abi Morgan

2/2

It was perhaps inevitable that the second part of Abi Morgan's drama about the after effects of the 2004 Asian tsunami would flag after last week's stunning opener. Time starts to hang heavy as the script occasionally loses its way and its momentum. Thus we leap around from one story to the next, like impatient grasshoppers: the British ambassador who's well-meaning but under-resourced; the desperate parents searching for their missing daughter; and the journalist who thinks he's on to a scoop. Yet there are still moving moments, notably involving the couple (Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sophie Okonedo) and their increasingly futile attempts to find their young daughter.

Twiglett · 05/12/2006 17:58

the first part was extremely moving

but they really should have shown it on consecutive nights .. it is not the kind of programme that, IMHO, lasts a week between parts

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 05/12/2006 17:58

sorry for the mixup

ComeOyefaithfulVeneer · 05/12/2006 18:00
