It was crap. Turned it off half way through.

I keep hearing how great Kathryn Bigelow's films are but they are all just ordinary.

How did Hurt Locker get Best Picture Oscar?

SurlyCue · 18/08/2015 12:38

Ah so its not just me. I havent seen hurt locker. Is it worth watching?

Zero dark thirty was just so cringey. Those characters (i'm assuming they were based on real people?) came across as incredibly thick.

I think i liked hurt locker

Zero dark thirty was shite

Flaperon · 18/08/2015 13:35

Hurt Locker is brilliant. I found Zero Dark Thirty just really boring.

limitedperiodonly · 18/08/2015 14:31

Don't ask me OP Grin. Maybe I'll watch it again and find it different.

It's not as if I haven't tried Kathryn Bigelow films. I found Point Break boring but most people rave about it as subversive counter culture. To me it's more evidence that Keanu Reeves can't act and Patrick Swayze wasn't much better.

Same with Near Dark. I love vampire films, especially modern ones, but again...Just vampires driving around in a van with blacked out windows and quite lame boy-meets-girl-vampire thing.

Conversely I love 30 Days Of Night (not one of hers) which is on ITV4 at 11.20pm tomorrow.

Some people hate it and it does have plot holes and a slightly hokey broken romance but I love the idea of a family of modern but ancient vampires who are ugly and foul and merciless searching for a community of lesser beings to feast on.

They are terrifying. Especially in a sequence where they use a human as live bait to draw out victims.

Sorry for the diversion into vampire films. But maybe someone else likes them...Grin

It was really rubbish.

Narp · 21/08/2015 09:46

I fell asleep (was tired anyway). But I could not work out what was going on. I am normally good at keeping up with complex plots, but everyone seemed to be mumbling, and it seemed to require too much prior knowledge.
Also, I didn't feel a great depth of character from Jessica Chastaine.

Hurt Locker is excellent

Narp · 21/08/2015 09:47

I found Point Break just rather random. Like there was something I was missing

SurlyCue · 21/08/2015 10:42

but everyone seemed to be mumbling
YES!! I noticed this too. Also the scenes where they carried out the raid on OBL's house were almost picth black! There was no visibility for really long periods. It was extrememly frustrating. I get they wanted to give a feel for the reality of it but it was really badly done. I saw a fantastic film which i think did true to the reality reallly well, it was acts of valour. I wasnt expecting much but it was brilliant for that very reason.

Surly

Yep - I feel increasingly middle-aged through not being able to see or hear things on TV properly. We bought a sound bar just to make dialogue audible.

Moanranger · 21/09/2015 01:54

Loved it, but it is majorly working the cinema verite vibe, so not to everyone's taste. You probably need to like French new wave to like Bigelow.
(I hated the film version of Les Miserables - walked out, which I rarely do, which has made me a complete outcast in my circle of friends.) Each to his own taste.
