How can I get ITV player and 4OD on my new LG smart TV?

Anyone have any ideas how to get ITV player and 4OD on an LG smart TV? It comes with a BBCiplayer app and a 5 on demand app but not the other two. Any ideas how I can download the apps?

Thanks.

Yeah, I've got a Now TV box. Cancelled subscription when the free 3 months ran out and it works fine for the extra channels. It's a great box actually, nice and quick.

TeamBacon · 10/08/2015 11:19

Or just exchange for the Samsung. You've been mid-sold, and you shouldn't have any trouble returning it.

GreenShadow · 10/08/2015 15:42

That's interesting Tricky. We were also mis-sold a TV in exactly the same way and that was also by John Lewis. This was a year and a half ago so interesting that they're still using this trick.
Not really the kind of image they try to project is it.

It wasn't too much of an issue for us as it was a bedroom TV and we can get ITV player etc. on our main one downstairs via our PS3 so we didn't follow it up - just moaned to ourselves a bit.

Sounds like it's definitely worth following up - wouldn't do their reputation any good if this got out...

Hi all - I spoke to John Lewis technical support today (during lunch break at work so didn't actually have TV in front of me). The man on the phone said that if I go into LG Contents Store on the TV then I should be able to download the catch up apps. I asked him multiple times whether LG was compatible with all the catch up channels and he confirmed that it was. So... this evening I will try this and see if it works. Luckily JL technical support is open until 9pm so if I can't get it to work I'll be back onto them!

Will come back and update you.

Thanks for letting us know, will try now!

VulcanWoman · 11/08/2015 15:20

I've been in to the LG Store on the TV and can't find ITV Player. Hope you have better luck.

Trickytricky · 11/08/2015 17:08

Vulcan - that does not fill me with confidence. I will have a look when I get home and then call JL again...

I looked at the LG contents page thingy and sadly couldn't find either the ITV Player or 4OD app. So decided to call JL technical support again (whilst I was in front of the TV this time!).

So... the man I spoke to was super helpful and really nice. The man said first off don't believe anything any of the sales assistants tell you! So that's good to know. He also said that if we weren't 100% happy with the TV we could exchange it or get a full refund - so good to hear that their customer service is still excellent (I've never had any complaints about JL).

So he advised that I call LG directly and ask them about ITV Player and 4OD. So I'm going to do that in the next couple of days - then this weekend we may pop into JL and try out all the TV and see which one ACTUALLY enables you to watch all of the on demand channels. I'll come back and update you...

TeamBacon the NowTV box seems like a good idea if nothing else works...

Sounds like good customer service then.
Will watch out for your update.

As far as I know Samsung are the only TV maker with licenses to provide all of the terrestrial TV catch up services in their smart tvs. Your alternative options are something like an Amazon stick or chromecast (I have now TV box and chrome cast but can't remember which has what services)

AndIfYouTolerateThis · 02/12/2015 10:20

This is so annoying! I've just bought an LG smart TV and discovered I can't access channel 4's catch up service! I also have a PS4 and it's not on there either! Angry

I don't know what channel 4 are doing - it was easier years ago! I can't even watch it on my laptop as it's dying and cannot cope with playing video! Sad The only way I can legitimately watch it is on my tiny phone, which seems daft considering I've just bought a new telly! No wonder people resort to illegal downloads, they hardly make it easy for you! Hmm

Anyway, after that rant, have I missed something (that doesn't involve buying another set top box or dongle thingy??!) or are channel 4 indeed shite?!

deeskeydoo · 29/01/2016 03:00

Most newer LG's have Miracast, so as long as your smartphone supports it, watch itv/ch 4 on your phone and 'cast' it to the TV. Works for me!

Giseroma · 24/02/2016 23:06

My husband has just pointed out that you can get itvplayer on a smart tv by using its internet browser function (rather than a dedicated ap), and entering itvplayer.com in the url line. I just tried it and it works.

DaveinSurrey · 08/12/2016 18:41

Same problem with mine. It would appear that Google/Sony bought the rights to make non google/sony Smart TV's rubbish.

OFCOM are too rubbish to do anything about it. Here is my response from LG - oddly it took a long time to get the truth out of them.

---------------------
In regards to this, unfortunately this TV does not come with the ITV Hub or All4 Application, as ITV and Channel 4 had signed an exclusivity deal with another major brand at the time of the release of these TV's.

Currently, this contract is still under-way, meaning we aren't able to bring these applications to our other TV's as yet.

Some of our 2016 range do have access to these applications, due to the release of Freeview Play.
This means that we are able to implement it on these systems, however as it stands at the moment, there are no plans to implement on Freeview Play onto any of our TV's that were released before 2016.

I apologise greatly for any inconvenience this may cause, however I hope this explains the situation a little clearer for you.

Should you need any more assistance, you can reply to this email by clicking the additional questions link at the bottom of this email.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards

LG Customer service

But a firestick. They are on all there and easy to use

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 08/12/2016 18:48

We have the LG smart TV and run a Now TV box through it for 4oD etc. Frankly the 'smart'mess of the TV was a waste of money but when we bought it I was 41.5 weeks pregnant and couldn't be arsed trying to explain to DH that he hadn't done enough research!

mnaddict1 · 08/12/2016 19:36

Fire stick is the only way to get all the channel catch up services unless you have a Samsung.

retyah1 · 14/08/2017 23:30

Hi,
I'm replying to an old post from 2015 from Trickytricky but maybe others are looking for a solution. If you cannot get All4 or ITV player on your TV but have a free HDMI port on your TV, as well as your Laptop, sign up free to both All4 and ITV on your laptop. Then get a long good quality HDMI cable. Plug one end into your TV and the other into your Laptop. Press source/Input on your TV remote, then choose. HDMI 1/2 or 3 depending on the number of the port you plugged the cable into on your TV and hey presto, all you can see and hear on your laptop will come through your TV and connected sound system. If you don't have a free HDMI port on your TV, you can temporarily unplug one you may be using for another service like a playstation etc. Ensure you don't have popup blockers enabled on your laptop via your browser or Virus software as ITV and All4 need to be able to run Ads. If you have, they are easy to disable. Just google it. The image on the TV is a reasonsble size although not full screen, even if you choose Full screen on laptop unless you want to investigate settings in your TV but I couldn't be bothered. Hope this helps someone.
