Is Six Feet Under suitable for a 14yo?

I've never seen it and was looking for a box set me and dd could watch together. It's a toss up between this and Northern Exposure (which I have seen but ages ago). I've never seen six feet under but hear it's good.

First season is rated 15 and following seasons are 18. Google suggests mainly due to nudity and homosexual relations......neither of which im bothered about her seeing as long as it's not majorly explicit sex scenes (either gay or straight). She can handle a glimpse of boobs and more im sure. Ditto the idea of gay relationships.

I think so, especially if you are watching it together. Lots of issues which can be springboards to further discussion. Northern Exposure bothers me much moreso as it involves a whole town bullying a man - couldn't get past that to get more than half way through the box set.

TravellingToad · 03/05/2015 17:03

no, as it progresses there is so many sex seasons that DH stopped watching as it just seemed like soft porn the whole bloody time. Starts off with less sex but goes downhill....

VivaLeBeaver · 03/05/2015 17:04

It must be 20 years since I've seen Northern Exposure, I was a teenager. Disn't really pick up on a bullying theme so either ive forgotten it or it went over my head. Do you mean people not liking the Dr because he wasn't local?

Oh, I only watched it last year and really don't remember any sex!

VivaLeBeaver · 03/05/2015 17:05

Oh, think we'll get Northern Exposure then. Soft porn is a step too far. Thanks.

Now, I'm undecided! One vote for, one vote against. Anyone else?

I was 14 when SFU started on TV. It's one of the best TV shows ever made. Absolutely not soft porn. It's a must watch!

VivaLeBeaver · 03/05/2015 17:07

Yay. Will get the first season and see how we go. I guess if it starts getting too explicit we can stop watching it.

Don't remember loads of sex. A bit. Not loads.

There's some drug use by various characters but it's almost always portrayed quite negatively, without moralising IYSWIM.

SFU was our first boxed set. Aahhh, happy memories!

HermioneWeasley · 03/05/2015 18:19

It's a brilliant series. I remember some sex as its a normal part of adult life, but not gratuitous soft porn!

If your 14 yr old is quite mature I think it would be ok, but it is quite adult in its tone and themes.

coppertop · 03/05/2015 18:21

I think there were a few scenes where a character is watching gay porn, although nothing too bad.

AppleAndBlackberry · 03/05/2015 18:23

I remember a lot of explicit sex scenes, I would say no, sorry.

KatharineClifton · 03/05/2015 18:37

So odd we all remember varying amounts of sex! I know my (then) 12 year olds occasionally sat down and watched bits when I was watching it, and don't remember me having to turn it off, which I would obviously have done if it were resembling a soft porn video. Perhaps I fell asleep in those bits Grin

I loved SFU - I can't remember anything too shocking but I do have a terrible memory.

HayDayRookie · 03/05/2015 21:39

I love six feet under but i would be Blush if i watched it with DD. Great series though.

mewkins · 03/05/2015 21:43

I would wait a few years! I think some of the characters. . Brenda for example, go off the the boil a bit.

NotPennysBoat · 03/05/2015 22:16

I watched it quite recently, I think the later seasons especially have some quite graphic sex scenes but I am a prude

VivaLeBeaver · 03/05/2015 22:18

Ok, will get Northern Exposure and wait a year or two for SFU. Thanks.

SFU is the second best after The Sopranos but, there is a lot of sex in it. I only watched it last year and there is a lot of it going on.

BitOfFun · 03/05/2015 22:34

For me, it isn't the sex I remember as problematic, but one particularly awful episode of horrible violence. It's essential to the story arc of one central character, so difficult to skip, but when I rewatched the series, I couldn't face a second viewing of that episode.

limitedperiodonly · 04/05/2015 20:32

I think it would be a bit of a shame to watch it too young, not because of the sex, but because the emotional scenes would go over the average 14-year-old's head and once seen you can never recapture it.

So from that POV I'd say 16 at the least.

It's very good.

I hate Nate.

EachandEveryone · 04/05/2015 21:02

It's amazing how your feelings for the character changed isn't it? Right up until the last season I couldn't take to Brenda.
