Caroline Quentin spends most of this episode wearing that sympathetic expression she can do so well. Interviewing a couple whose three-year- old child is missing, she gives them a lingering look of sympathy. Telling them they've found a body or telling the wife her husband's alibi doesn't stand up - there it is again. But there's a good reason for all this compassion, because the case that Manchester cop Janine Lewis is investigating is such a difficult and emotive one. It's a competent piece of storytelling, although it has none of the gritty realism of, say, a Prime Suspect or a Cracker. But even if you find Blue Murder too cosy, this episode is worth watching just to catch Quentin's brilliant performance as an embarrassing drunk.
