I don't understand 'Fortitude' (possible accidental spoilers)

I cannot admit this to anyone in RL, but I have no idea what is going on. I understand that Eccleston was killed, and that Tucci is trying to work out who did it.

The rest of it is a mystery to me. What does the dead mammoth have to do with anything? Why has that guy taken his daughter off to go and live in a tent? What does the creepy feeder guy have to do with anything?

It's as though I am watching it in a language I don't know very well. I have never been very good at inferring hidden agendas or reading 'between the lines'.

Please can someone explain what the heck is going on (up to end of episode four).

What was she spewing up?! Gross.

Was just about to give up on this series then watched the last three episodes yesterday and today. Liking it a lot more now!

Rollergirl1 · 06/03/2015 12:51

Yes, it was really rather vile. Given that everything else she did was pretty much identical to what Liam did to Stoddart (hitting round the head and opening them up with a kitchen utensil) I assume that Liam also vomited the clear liquid in to the cavity. And seeing as nothing untoward came up about that in Stoddart's post-mortem I wonder what the purpose of it is.

It definitely stepped up a notch last night that's for sure!

Marking my place, I'm loving this even tho slightly confusing Hmm

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 07/03/2015 17:59

for fuck's sake that was pretty gross

Ledkr · 08/03/2015 10:51

Good grief, it really was wasn't it?

AnimalsAreMyFriends · 08/03/2015 14:55

OMG Have just caught up with this week's episode!!! Shock That was just vile!!!

I also just watched the Behind the Scenes documentary that I recorded a couple of weeks ago.

Ledkr · 08/03/2015 20:14

Is it good? Worth a watch

TheFirstOfHerName · 08/03/2015 20:28

Sorry, had to temporarily hide the thread while I caught up. Ace has helped a lot with clear explanations, and the last two episodes did seem to work towards a pattern emerging.

Watched this last night - OMG.

Even DH, who has a concrete stomach, had to watch the murder on x2.

I'd forgotten, until reading this thread, that Dan was already in Charlie's house when Vincent found Charlie. What's that all about?

AceOfSkulls · 09/03/2015 23:16

Just caught up with the last episode. Wow.

That was grotesquely brilliant.

So, to recap: Liam definitely killed Charlie (even though we didn't actually see it), and then in last week's flashback he told his dad that he'd 'thrown up'. So, having seen the chain of events first hand with Shelley this week we can assume that Liam cut Charlie's stomach open, vomited the frogspawn-stuff into his gut and then tried to close him up again, like Shelley did to her mum.

The mum is still alive - we saw a deliberate shot of her still breathing - and Charlie was also still alive when Liam left him, he just died later in the ambulance. So perhaps the virus/invader is trying to propagate by infecting its victims in this way.

Shelley came into first-hand contact with the mammoth remains when she investigated the lock-up a few episodes back, so we can maybe assume she was infected that way (especially as she coughed at the time) rather than an infection in the water, as suggested by last week's shot of the fluid leaking down the drain.

The bastard with the boat has made off with the tusks. A possible further outbreak of the virus there.

Ronnie is still suffering with his hand but isn't necessarily infected - unless he, or Carrie, WERE infected and have already passed the frogspawn on. Remember the scene in the tent, when Carrie woke up in the middle of the night because something (a reindeer?) was outside? Ronnie went outside for awhile, then came back and said it was nothing, but in the morning we saw a shot of blood on the ice. Maybe we'll get a flashback of Carrie, in a trance-state, going outside that night and vomiting into a reindeer's stomach (I can't believe I just typed that sentence).

Yuri, the Mad Russian, is awesome.

Anything else?

Love this show, and it's careful and deliberate flipping between crime and horror. Such a shame it's getting critically panned and hardly anyone's watching it...

diddl · 10/03/2015 08:09

Does anyone else think that the wounds on Charlie's body seem to be healing??

PacificDogwood · 10/03/2015 20:53

Ace, it's only when reading your summary that I realise I saw everything you described but never made sense of it - I suspect I am too thick for that show Blush

And it's being critically panned? Really?! How odd interesting.

sourdrawers · 11/03/2015 17:30

I haven't liked it from the off, but DP insists it will get better so we're sticking with it for now. Though even he agreed that it descended into a new level of daftness last week..

It's got all the ingredients, but just lacks dramatic tension I think. Despite all the moodiness and the arty-fartyness of the photography. It just doesn't make sense either. Not the plot, though god knows that's difficult enough. But the characters and the way they behave. There's no sense of danger or of events sort of 'closing in'.. (whispers) I'm bored by it

TheFirstOfHerName · 15/03/2015 20:59

This week's episode got a bit suspenseful towards the end. I'm still a bit confused about who's who; especially the characters with beards and wearing parkas Grin

DH correctly guessed the identity of the man-in-black-with-bike-helmet-and-baseball-bat, just based on his gait, but is just as crap as I am at remembering any of the characters' names.

I think I'm starting to understand it now.

Episode 10 was a bit much. Each episode seems to be slightly more difficult to watch than the last.
