Just realised that all this thinking about FF writing, spouting my opinions, analysing it and commenting has simply been an effective way of just avoiding doing it - which is what I was supposed to be doing.

Onlygirljen · 17/02/2015 13:27

I’ll try and be careful about what I say here, as I was planning on keeping my mouth shut on this, but here goes.

I can see it from both sides. I have said before that I enjoy klipdoctor’s stuff – he is an excellent writer. I enjoy his stories, and I review them, as I try and do with the other ff’s I read and enjoy. I am as guilty as the next person of sometimes reading and not reviewing; that can be for many reasons. Generally, it’s because I’ve hidden myself away for 5 minutes to read an update, and have to run back to whatever I was doing, whether that be work or kids. On the whole, I do try and make sure that I go back and review at some stage, but I don’t always get a chance / remember to on top of the ten million other things on my to do list.

The reason I do try my hardest to review consistently is because since starting to write ff, I do realise the importance of the review function to an author. I can only liken it to a work scenario, where you plug away at something, but it really gives you an extra motivation if somebody takes a minute to give you a pat on the back rather than to leave it and just expect you to work away regardless.

However, I don’t think you can use number of reviews as an indication of how good a piece of writing is. If people are consistently reading (and ff tells you if that is the case in your stats), then the likelihood is that they are enjoying it. I’ve been lucky enough to have quite a lot of reviews for HCIF, but there are pieces of OG writing on the site which are infinitely better, with far less reviews. As an example, I’ve had very kind people who have said how much they enjoyed Involved, and it was read by just as many people as HCIF, but it got far, far less reviews – I don’t think that means that it's a worse story, I think it’s because less people reviewed it, simple as that.

I haven’t read klipdoctor’s latest update yet, although have seen the author’s note after the references to it on here. While I can see why it would dent his confidence for reviews to fall, I don’t think it’s acceptable to label people as lazy if they are reading and not reviewing. There could be a million and one reasons for people to fail to review. I will say again that he is an excellent writer, and I for one, will be disappointed if he ends it here, but that is his choice. I do hope he realises though, that there are a lot of people who enjoy what he does, and it would be a shame to bring that to an end if it’s simply for the reason that he’s not happy with the level of reviews.

Sorry if that was a bit of a self-indulgent ff rant, but it was brewing inside of me!

PS rhubarb, I want to read whatever you write, I don’t care if it’s OG related! Please continue to share your stuff with us!

I should probably get some work done now....

LolaKent14 · 17/02/2015 13:52

I was just with a friend and asked her opinion on his comments. Her comment was if you read a book you don't necessarily write to that author you tell people its good, you buy the next one they write. Thats how you recognise their talents. He has had some really positive feedback on FB, MN and Twitter.

Telling people to read something you enjoyed has been ff. I share the links for MN writers on Twitter as not everyone comes on here. For my writing I don't always get many comments left but I know from here and twitter that people have enjoyed my writing which spurs me on to write more.

He also left me a nice comment for What If. And I have reviewed many of his chapters and left feedback.

It feels as though its blackmail don't leave a review I won't write anymore. Like I say I stopped reading his stuff a while back and focus on the MN writers now as everyone is so talented.

However he has opened a debate today which is a good thing as maybe it spurs us on to get writing!

icemistOBE · 17/02/2015 14:05

I did a review on his chapter (as a guest) saying I liked his work but I don't reviews every chapter, but that doesn't mean I've not liked it as I don't review every chapter of every story. And that surely as long as people are reading that's good But I noticed he's deleted it....

lola that's how I view it. I loved the first 2 books Cecila Ahern wrote but her next one was awful and I've tried another since and hated it too.

So, having been away a while (again) I thought I would catch up today and can't believe that Klipdoctor is subject of the day again.

From my POV, I decided I wouldn't be reviewing anymore of his work due to the reaction I got last time (a personal rant from him that my review was wrong in some way) so basically, you can't have your cake and eat it. If you beg for reviews then reject them, don't expect people to continue reviewing.

Do you think he gets some weird self gratification when he says I won't write anymore because there aren't enough reviews then his loyal OGA fans have some kind of outpouring of grief?

I am still an avid reader of FF and have come to the conclusion that all of the best stories are those that have gone completely off piste away from the original script, such as most of the MN authors. Keep up the good work everyone.

moojangles · 17/02/2015 14:33

Previous post took hours to show up on here, odd.

Love reading ff but resent the feeling that feedback is almost compulsory

pixieg1rl · 17/02/2015 15:09

As someone who is pretty lax about reviewing other peoples ff (sorry about that) I think it would be churlish to complain that others don't review mine.

moojangles · 17/02/2015 15:12

aaargh, meant that I resent that some authors make you feel like that. Personally feel in awe of anyone brave enough to write & publish on ff, regardless of my response to it.

icemistOBE · 17/02/2015 15:19

Was just about to ask lola when there would be a new chapter of OG meets Broadchurch and it's already on. Fab stuff as usual Grin

Haha lola, love it!

onefor glad to see you pop in, was just thinking the other day that I hadn't seen you post in a while.

Has CJ turned up anywhere post release from cjwoof. I do hope his traumatised body has managed to replenish itself Smile

moojangles · 17/02/2015 17:35

I do believe he was released/ being sent in my direction

moojangles · 17/02/2015 17:46

Have checked his arrival time.... Off to see FSOG, for preparation purposes, and am picking CJ up on the way home..soz

orphan · 17/02/2015 17:55

icemist what has klipdoctor deleted? I can still see his comments. I just think it's a shame that he seems to value reviews (and it's not as if he's not getting any) over the actual writing and the loyal followers who do post. I'm not a reader of his work anymore, but I think I'd feel pretty peed off on reading his comments. Just glad that 'our' writers don't share the same philosophy, cos it makes my day when I see updates!

icemistOBE · 17/02/2015 17:55

Make sure you stop off in b&q for supplies Wink

icemistOBE · 17/02/2015 17:57

Just a review. I changed it slightly and its there now. As an author you have a timeframe to approve or delete reviews
