This is the last ever Prime Suspect and, fittingly, it's a stop-you-in-your-tracks, brilliant drama that's thoughtful, multilayered and exquisitely well acted, written and directed. It is a stunning piece of television that's already won my vote as drama of the year because nothing else comes close. Helen Mirren as Detective Superintendent Jane Tennison gives a career-best performance (and what a career) as a woman who's spent a lifetime in the police and is weeks from retirement. But Tennison is a mess: flawed, lonely, struggling with an alcohol problem and trying to cope with the tearing hole that's about to be ripped in her life by the imminent death of her terminally ill father. And she has one last case left to solve: the disappearance of a 14-year-old girl. Frank Deasy's marvellous script is precisely what every TV crime drama script should be: a finely honed, perfectly pitched examination of the consequences of one devastating act on concentric circles of people, from the missing girl's parents, through her friends and associates, to the officers investigating her disappearance. This is essential viewing. Do not, whatever you do, miss it or next week's concluding episode.
