OP posts:

Brighter Queen Lucia is the first book.

butterflymacqueen · 31/12/2014 18:09

My 13 DS year old and I are hooked!

silveroldie2 · 31/12/2014 18:24

I loved the original series- I'm sorry but watching Miranda Richardson reminded me of OTT amateur dramatics. The original cast were SO much better.

HelenaDove · 31/12/2014 21:05

So Prunella Scales WAS in the original series then. I did NOT know that. Ive never seen the original series at all.

butterflymacqueen · 31/12/2014 21:16

I love Lucia's fashion- if only I was tall- sigh!

flashystars · 31/12/2014 21:34

I had to check it wasn't prunella scales. Just a total impersonation by Miranda Richardson

MelanieCheeks · 31/12/2014 21:37

Urgh, hate it. The teeth, the caniving (sp), the back stabbing.

I'm guessing that's in the books, not just the telly adaptation, but I find it all a little cringe worthy.

MissBattleaxe · 01/01/2015 00:09

Well I love it and I love Miranda Richardson- she is always so watchable and I think the voice is a byproduct of the "hundreds of teeth". It is quietly hilarious, and I love Felicity Montagu too ( aka Lynn in Alan Partridge)

DuchessofMalfi · 01/01/2015 09:41

I watched Part 2 last night and enjoyed it, then went straight onto Part 3 and fell asleep Blush. Woke up just as it was ending. DH recorded it for me, so will catch up this evening. He admitted to dozing off half way through as well. God I hate getting old :o

susiedaisy · 01/01/2015 13:05

I haven't read the books but am loving this series. I'm enjoying the scenery and the lovely barmy weather in it as much as the acting

Bearleigh · 01/01/2015 17:48

I love the books, and thought this was a really good adaptation. I always imagined Lucia as being tiny, and very chic, so Anna Chancellor wouldn't have occurred to me, but she was excellent. Mapp is a Big Woman in my imagination, so again MR wouldn't have occurred to me, but I thought she was very good too, as are all the supporting cast - Georgie is perfetto. I haven't seen the original series but this is spot on for me. And the clothes and weather are great too.

PumpkinRain · 01/01/2015 20:40

I normally love things from this era. I thought it was awful at first but stuck with it sadly it didn't improve.

Pinkwillow · 01/01/2015 22:37

I think that I've been spoilt by watching 'Les Petites Muertres'. The French adaptations of Agatha Christie's stories, made with charm, humour, and also a touch of rudeness Grin

fussychica · 02/01/2015 18:56

I hated it - turned off after 40 mins, so I did give it a fair go. My DH thought I was mad to give it more than 5 minutesGrin

Davros · 02/01/2015 19:04

I am a Mapp and Lucia freak, have loved the books for years and read them many times, loved the first tv series and have it on DVD .... But this series left me rather cold. I quite enjoyed it and wanted to watch but felt a bit flat afterwards. I wonder if they are going to do more, it seemed set for another series. Maybe 3 episodes wasn't enough to really enjoy it?

AimlesslyPurposeful · 03/01/2015 20:46

Those of you with the original series on DVD - Is it as aesthetically pleasing as this new series?

Love the fashions and interiors. I'd love to float around a garden room in satin blouses teamed with wide leg trousers.

Is the original series set in Rye too?

ConcreteElephant · 03/01/2015 21:23

It is set in Rye, yes.

To be honest, I don't think it was quite as 'vibrant' colours-wise but it's hard to explain. The new series was like glorious, rich, technicolour whereas the original is more pastel iyswim? I'd say it's a very pleasing watch but not as rich as the modern one. The original is quite beautiful, very genteel and relaxing, and true to period though.

stareatthetvscreen · 03/01/2015 21:31

i think old series was more comic and much much better.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 03/01/2015 23:13

I do understand what you mean about the pastel ConcreteElephant. The old Miss Marple programmes are often pastel in comparison to the newer ones. Almost like watching through tissue paper.

I shall have a look for the DVDs on Amazon now.

Davros · 04/01/2015 00:59

I am now scared to watch the old series in case the production values are crap, it is quite old now. Oh well, I think I will force myself in the interests of research ( and to have another M&L fest)

DramaAlpaca · 04/01/2015 01:13

I was so looking forward to this but only lasted 10 minutes. Miranda Richardson's over-acting was too much for me. A pity, as she's usually wonderful.

Echocave · 04/01/2015 03:27

Davros, they showed a couple of the original episodes on ITV 3 or Encore (whatever it's called) and it's still very watchable! Yes the colours are muted but that's just how tv was then (I blame Desperate Housewives and High Def telly for the almost gaudy colours of current programmes. The Geraldine McEwen 'Marple' series was a shocking offender for this with prints and colours you just wouldn't have got in the impoverished postwar '50's'. [bee in bonnet].). The acting is really good and a lot less foaming at the mouth over-acting. The recent series was quite hard edged and exposed the cruelty quite violently. The original series is much more about genteel one upmanship and has a far lighter touch. Definitely worth a watch.

ConcreteElephant · 04/01/2015 09:02

I agree with Echocave that the original series is less 'vicious' - I was quite shocked by the new series. The one upmanship of the original turned into rather cruel bitching and bullying.

I far prefer the original. The production values are dated, absolutely, from the apparent manual scrolling of the scenery in the opening titles to the very obvious 'sets' for some of the interiors, but it's totally charming nonetheless.

SoupDragon · 04/01/2015 09:24

I'm so glad you said it this. Knowing nothing about the books or previous TV series, I was expecting something like you described the original series. I couldn't watch this one as it was so nasty.

Davros · 04/01/2015 10:34

Excellent, I am off to dig out my DVDs of the old series. Au reservoir!
