Watership Down - Big Mistake!!

Last night I saw Watership Down was on Film4 and I thought it would be so nice for us all to sit and watch it as I remember I used to love it when I was little so I made popcorn and sat them all down to watch.
OMG I'd forgotten how gruesome it is. Half way into it both kids were traumatised by all the blood "why did the men fill the holes in mummy; why did the rabbits die?" so by the time I'd calmed them both down it was gone 10 and I was knackered!
dp spent the whole evening taking the p* suggesting I take them to see Texas Chainsaw Massacre next, so at least he had an entertaining evening.
Kids today -they're so soft

mummy ~ I cried my eyes out when I watched it as a child and used to cry whenever the song came on (was in charts)
IMO it's not a child's film at all.

LOL - watership down is horrific. My son loved it though. Used to like Animal Farm too

urgh... the black rabbit appeared in my childhood nightmares for years and years. Don't think I could watch it even now.

Thing is there was no such thing as videos or dvd's in my day so I watched it once at the pictures and probably once when it came on tv, so I had honestly forgotten the bloody bits.
I knew the old rabbit died at the end but although I think I cried it was a kind of happy ending.
Just goes to show how we think things are too violent today, yet nobody batted an eyelid back then (or did they and I just forgot?)

That was the first film to give me nightmares.
