I thought Glasgow but it's starting to look rather seaside town rather than city

The location of the school does indeed seem to float around like a magical island. Maybe it's secretly Hogwarts.

We're just watching the muggle version. The wizarding version is much more interesting

Greenock is located where the River Clyde become the Firth of Clyde and is a former industrial town about 45 mins drive from Glasgow. Seaside would be pushing it a bit , although huge cruise ships do come in from time to time.
