I think it was a one-off play possibly starring John Hurt (but I can't find anything online to back me up on this) about a man whose wife leaves him and he starts a slow decline into madness. He barricades himself in his house, stops answering the door, catches cats in the garden at night to eat, fills his freezer with animals, electricity etc gets cut off, etc. It's not pretty, lets put it like that. I saw it maybe 2003 to 2005ish??? It was a one off I think. Does anyone remember anything like this? Googling has not come up with anything.

Sorry OP, have no idea, but will bump for you .

iklboo · 21/09/2014 15:47

Thought it might have been All The Little Animals but some parts don't quite match.

NotALondoner · 21/09/2014 15:54

No, it's not that but thanks for the bump and reply. It is set in England and as far as I can remember all the action takes place in and around the house and garden.

There's only him, his wife, a woman from his work who knocks on the door to see why he hasn't been to work, and a man who knocks on the door to ask if he wants ?cable tv? installing.

They are the only characters I remember, I mean.

Have you checked here? List of John Hurt tv and film appearances.

NotALondoner · 21/09/2014 16:07

Nothing looks familiar. But the thing is, I'm not actually sure if it is John Hurt. It's someone like him - white, good actor, middle aged-ish, but not definitely him.

OP posts:
NotALondoner · 21/09/2014 16:12

Might be Sir Ian McKellan.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 21/09/2014 17:32

sounds like a 'play for today' or 'tales of the unexpected' or a one off thing like that?

maybe check listings and cast for them?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/09/2014 18:01

It's not "Whistle and I'll Come to You"?

(He's in a hotel barricaded in, wife has died I think)

NotALondoner · 21/09/2014 18:23

No, not Whistle.
It was like a play for today type thing but it was a recent programme, filmed and shown between 2003ish and 2005ish.

Fairly sure someone was asking about this on Chat a month or two ago (or was that you? Grin ) but don't know if they reached a conclusion or not.

NotALondoner · 21/09/2014 18:39

Ooh I don't think it was me, but I do have a burst of non productive googling every now and then so...Confused

Do you remember what that thread was called? Or who by?

OP posts:
AnathemaIsANiceNameForAGirl · 21/09/2014 18:51

No, sorry

Think it was called similar to this, "does anyone know what this TV programme was" or something...

AnyoneForTARDIS · 21/09/2014 19:07

John Hurt, Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Simon Callow, Charles Dance, could it be any of them?

NotALondoner · 21/09/2014 19:59

Hmm I've googled but it doesn't seem to be any of them.

Any more actors like them?

OP posts:
AnyoneForTARDIS · 21/09/2014 20:01

Cant thinkl of any more actors around that age at the time.

sure it was made that year or was it an old programme they happened to show that year?

any more details you can give/remember?

NotALondoner · 21/09/2014 20:05

It was set around then so if it was a film it wasn't that old. It had the look of a 'Play for Today' but they were stopped a long time ago, weren't they?

misspamela · 21/09/2014 20:07

Walter.

Paloma12 · 21/09/2014 20:17

I remember watching it randomly orb night in 2005. Not sure what it was called though. Freaked me out. Did he order a pizza and throw it back up? Hmm

Paloma12 · 21/09/2014 20:46

I'm sure the actor was called Anthony. But not Hopkins!

AnyoneForTARDIS · 21/09/2014 21:11

Anthony Hopkins? Anthony Head?

NotALondoner · 21/09/2014 21:13

I don't remember the pizza but I am cheered to see you remember it! Any other details? Was it a play?

OP posts:
NotALondoner · 21/09/2014 21:22

Neither Hopkins nor Head as far as I can see. Sad
